Kellogg Business for Scientists Executive Education Program

Program Details:

The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs, The Graduate School and the Kellogg School of Management is offering Northwestern University postdoctoral fellows the opportunity to participate in Kellogg’s Business for Scientists Executive Education program. Designed for academics and practitioners in the fields of science and engineering, this highly interactive program provides an introduction to business concepts and industry-specific tools and frameworks. Over the course of the program, you will develop foundational skills and knowledge in accounting, strategy, finance, marketing and management — and learn how to apply these tools to your particular industry or role.

Led by an esteemed group of academics and practitioners, the 5-day certificate program will cover topics such as taking innovation from bench to market, transitioning to a leadership role, launching a startup, managing intellectual property, implementing negotiation strategies and more. Armed with these tools and frameworks, you’ll be prepared to face new challenges — and embrace new opportunities — that demand a management mindset.

Course Location and Dates:

This course will take place on July 13 through July 17, 2015 in Wieboldt Hall on Northwestern University’s Chicago campus.  More information on this course is available herePostdoctoral fellows MUST apply using the online OPA application tool. You will NOT be able to register for the course without submitting an application to the OPA. Applications should be submitted by Friday, March 20th, 2015 at 5:00pm.

Eligibility Guidelines:

Only current Northwestern postdoctoral fellows are eligible to apply for this program. An applicant must be a postdoctoral fellow at the time of application as well as during the June course. Applicants must have a University-designated title of Postdoctoral Fellow to be considered, including: Postdoctoral Fellow; Postdoctoral Fellow-Dept of Education; NRSA Postdoctoral Fellow; Visiting Postdoctoral Fellow.

This course is designed for those with training from a Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) discipline.  If you have questions about eligibility, please contact the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs.

Application Instructions:

The application period occurs once per year, opening in late December and closing in late March. Postdoctoral fellows interested in applying should submit all application materials through the online OPA Application System.  Applications must include the following components:

  1. Applicant Information
  2. CV/resume (Limit of 4 pages)
  3. List of any courses or programs taken in the last 5 years in the areas of: business, management, leadership, or accounting/finance
  4. Statement of Purpose (Limit of 750 words)
  5. Research Abstract (Limit of 250 words)
  6. Advisor/Supervisor Letter of Support (Please note: This letter can be provided by your direct supervisor, a co-mentor, or another faculty member that serves in an advisory capacity for your postdoctoral training at Northwestern University.)

All application materials MUST be submitted through the OPA Application System. All postdocs must apply through the process arranged by the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs in order to be considered for placement in this course.  Applications must be submitted by Friday, March 20th, 2015 at 5:00pm.  There are a limited number of spots available for placement, therefore, late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

Selection Process:

A review committee assembled by the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs will consider applications. Applicants should demonstrate why they wish to participate in the course, how the course will augment their postdoctoral training at Northwestern University, and how the course will help to achieve their career goals.  Applicants will need to address these areas in a concise and compelling statement of purpose (maximum of 750 words).

Selection Notification, Course Registration and Fees:

Chosen applicants will be notified in May and will be given instructions for registration at that time.  The registration fees for postdoctoral fellows selected to participate in this course will be covered by The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs and The Graduate School.  All postdocs selected to participate will NOT have to pay any course fees.
