DUAL PHD PROGRAM WITH THE INSTITUT D'ETUDES POLITIQUES (SCIENCES PO),  THE ÉCOLE DES HAUTES ÉTUDES EN SCIENCES SOCIALES (EHESS), AND THE ÉCOLE NORMALE SUPÉRIEURE-LETTRES ET SCIENCES HUMAINES (ENS-LSH).
Northwestern University has established dual PhD programs with France’s premier institutions of higher education in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Though the requirements are somewhat flexible, Northwestern students typically spend two years of study in France (not necessarily consecutively). They do research, begin writing their dissertation under the direction of a joint Northwestern-partner institution dissertation committee, and become eligible for the degrees of both institutions. During the Northwestern student’s first year in France, he or she pursues a course of studies and research established jointly by his or her French and Northwestern advisors. The student's second year is devoted primarily to research and writing. Students may be drawn from any program or school whose interests match those of the partner faculties. These include but are not limited to all students in the Humanities and Social Sciences as well as Communication Studies. All requirements, procedures and deadlines for each university apply to students in this joint program. A student who fails to meet the requirements of one university will not be eligible to receive a degree from that university.
