In addition to working closely with a mentor, PFF Fellows are required to attend the year long graduate seminar TGS 564 “On College Teaching” taught by the Searle Center for Teaching Excellence. Drawing upon their many years of experience in pedagogical education, the Searle has designed this course to help graduate students adjust to their upcoming roles as professional teachers. Students will meet eight times over the year with a Searle staff member to learn the core skills of teaching. Through a combination of discussion and written assignments, students will learn how to write a winning teaching philosophy, design an effective course syllabus and develop an engaging teaching style. Taken together these core skills will introduce graduate students to their future pedagogical responsibilities as faculty members. TeachingCenter
