> How would you describe your research in 1 or 2 sentences?

My research examines separatist conflict. Why do some groups achieve their goals of independence and autonomy while so many others struggle in vain?

> Can you explain that a little further?

Separatist groups face obstacles in their attempts to create new states out of the territory of existing ones. The research is based on fieldwork in Southern Sudan, Somaliland, Kosovo, and eventually East Timor and Western Sahara.  I am particularly interested in the diplomacy of these groups - how they attempt to provoke intervention in their conflicts, manipulate the politics of outside states, and organize their internal affairs with an eye towards gaining international recognition.

> How did you decide to enter your field, and what brought you to your topic?

I have always been interested in politics and enjoy the challenge of working in difficult environments.

> Who is your advisor?

My advisor is William Reno and Hendrik Spruyt and Ian Hurd are also on the committee. It's an excellent committee to have and I owe much to their example. Reno is an incredible and dedicated advisor.

> What are your interests outside of research?

Outside of research I enjoy music, playing guitar and traveling.

> What are your future plans?

I plan to continue in academe.
