The Versatile PhD is a web-based resource that The Graduate School (TGS) students and postdocs can use anytime, from any computer, confidentially. TGS purchased a subscription through which students and postdocs may access Versatile PhD's "PhD Career Finder."
Though most content is geared toward PhD students and postdocs in humanities and social science, the site has expanded and includes content for scientists as well. Content currently available on the Versatile PhD website includes:
- A thriving, supportive web-based community where students and postdocs can participate in discussions as well as network with PhDs and ABDs (all but dissertations) outside the academy.
- Examples of successful resumes and cover letters that resulted in humanities and social science PhDs and ABDs getting their first post-academic positions.
- Compelling first-person narratives written by successful humanities and social science PhDs and ABDs who have gone on to non-academic careers, describing how their careers have developed after grad school and where they are today.
- Detail-rich panel discussions in which Versatile PhDs working in a given non-academic field describe their jobs and answer questions. Past topics include: Freelance Writing and Editing, Higher Education Consulting, Management Consulting, Federal Government and University Administration.
TGS Graduate Students and Northwestern Postdoctoral Fellows must login with their NetID to access Versatile's "PhD Career Finder."
