Northwestern University Resources
Northwestern does not have an official grievance resolution process in place for postdoctoral fellows. However, there are a number of resources available to postdocs who believe that they are the victims of unfair treatment. If you are involved in a workplace conflict, you may want to contact the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs as a first step. The OPA can then offer advice and direct you toward those who can best help to resolve the situation.
Northwestern's Department of Human Resources can serve as another resource for postdocs who have a grievance or are facing a workplace conflict. In the case of a workplace conflict, it is important that you are familiar with the the policies and procedures regarding employment that are administered by Northwestern's Department of Human Resources. Human Reources policies and procedures can be accessed by following this link.
Postdoctoral fellows are always welcome to discuss grievances or instances of workplace conflict with the OPA. However, the following services are available to postdocs who wish to discuss grievances or conflicts confidentially:
- Faculty-Staff Assistance Program This service is designed to offer confidential and professional help without charge for faculty, staff, and members of their families who need assistance with personal problems. Confidential evaluation, counseling and referral services are provided at no cost to faculty or staff or their family members. The provider of these services is PERSPECTIVES, Ltd. This information is from the NU HR website, for further details please follow the link.
- Women's Center The Women's Center offers many services to not just women but also to couples and men. The counseling service is free and confidential.
Multicultural Affairs advisors at the Graduate School may also be available to discuss workplace-related concerns with postdocs. For more information follow this link.
Additional Resources
In addition, there are a number of postdoc-specific resources on the web that offer good advice on how postdocs can handle workplace conflict. One of the most extensive guides to grievance and conflict resolution for postdocs was developed by the Stanford University Postdoctoral Association. The guide, "Good Grief!: A guerilla guide to getting workplace problems addressed at Stanford University" was developed by postdocs for postdocs and it is full of excellent advice on how postdocs can constructively address workplace problems. Though some of the information is Stanford-specific, much of it is applicable to any postdoc who is facing conflicts with his or her coworkers or PI. You can access the Stanford guide by following this link.
The MIT Ombuds Office also has a variety of resources that may be helpful to postdocs facing workplace conflicts. You can access their page by following this link. See especially the resources listed under the section called "Self-help tools."
