Professional Development

The OPA aims to develop professional development programs for postdoctoral fellows and also actively advocates for wider inclusion of postdoctoral fellows in workshops and events offered by other university offices as graduate programs.  We are pleased to announce that postdoctoral fellows are welcome to register for many of these programs that are offered by offices across campus. We also bring you news of regional and national events that might be of interest to you. Suggest topics you would like us to include.

Career Management Workshop

  • In our first year we organized two intensive half-day workshops on finding funding and grant writing.  We also worked with the international Office to deliver a program led by 3 Chicago law firms on Immigration Law.  We have linked with offices across the University to advertise events and workshops being held that postdoctoral fellows might benefit from.
  • At the moment, we looking at making available a calendar that will collectively display postdoc-relevant events that are occurring on campus as well as regionally to enable our Fellows to choose those that are most relevant for their individual development.
  • Also, the Individual Development Plan (IDP) is envisioned to be a helpful document for postdoctoral fellows to keep track of what they would like to participate in.  The IDP workshop is a starting point to set the ball rolling, and use of the tool can assist in empowering a postdoctoral fellow and bettering postdoc-PI relationships.
  • In addition, postdoctoral training is also meant to be a time when exploration of career choices, both academic and non-academic should be done.  Academic networking often happens at conferences and meetings where you help directly, but networking or increasing contact pool is essential and the OPA is evaluating innovative ways to provide such opportunities to postdoctoral fellows.
