Greetings to the Community of Postdoctoral Fellows,
I am pleased that you have chosen to undertake your postdoctoral training at Northwestern University. Postdoctoral fellows are an integral component of our educational and research environment and we are extremely happy that you have chosen to join our ambitious academic enterprise. Your knowledge and contribution to colleagues in your immediate laboratory, particularly graduate and undergraduate students, and also to the wider institutional research community is highly valued. We also understand that your experience here should be of benefit to you as well as to us. Postdoctoral training is an exciting, crucial time in your blossoming career, after all. For this reason, we are pleased to inform you that Northwestern has extensive resources to make your training here enriching and rewarding.
Among the most important resources we have for your benefit is The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA). This office, opened in September 2006 and located within The Graduate School, serves as a central resource on postdoctoral training and education at Northwestern. The OPA serves many functions, including governing policies on postdoctoral training, enhancing postdoctoral education, ensuring fair employment conditions, sponsoring professional development workshops, managing individual postdoc or faculty concerns, and liaising on behalf of our constituents with other university offices. Our director of postdoctoral affairs, Aparna Bhatnagar, herself once a postdoctoral fellow at Northwestern, is an active, engaged advocate on behalf of your community and is ready and able to respond to the needs of postdocs on the Evanston and Chicago campuses.
The OPA actively maintains a comprehensive website and has a listserv to disseminate postdoctoral training-specific information that the OPA receives from its network of colleagues and peer institutions. I encourage you to utilize these and other resources available to you.
Once again, I welcome you to Northwestern and encourage you to contact us at the OPA for any matter to make your time at Northwestern productive, valuable, and memorable.
