Prepare for taxes and FAFSA

It's the time of year to start thinking about filing your federal and state (IL) tax returns!

W-2/1042-S forms

New this year – electronic W-2 Form Option

Didn’t receive your W-2 from NU yet?  If you were paid as a graduate or research assistant during the 2011 calendar year, you should have received your W-2 form from the Payroll Office by January 31st unless you enrolled in the electronic W-2 form option.  The good news is that you still should be able to view and print your W-2 if you have an active payroll appointment.

Navigation:  log into FASIS Self Service using your net ID and password; go to Payroll/Compensation – View W-2 Forms – Year End Forms (allow pop up).  All W-2 questions should be directed to the Payroll Office (847) 491-7362.  Note:  you won’t receive a W-2 if your funding was solely from a fellowship or traineeship; though you will receive one if you had Payroll withhold a specific dollar for taxes.

International students who have received payments for fellowships/scholarships should receive a 1042-S from Payroll by March 15th.

Filing your tax returns

You must report on your federal and state tax returns any fellowship/traineeship stipend (after you make deductions for books, supplies and required fees) which you received during the 2011 calendar year. The instruction booklets for each federal return provide information on how and where to report any fellowship funds. W-2s issued by Northwestern do not reflect your fellowship stipend. If you received a Summer 2011 fellowship, don’t forget to report it. For tax information, please review IRS Publication 970 – Tax Benefits for Education and the TGS Financial Aid Web site.   Don't forget to retain copies of your Federal and state tax returns!

Once you have filed your 2011 tax return, U.S. citizens/permanent residents are advised to complete a 2012/2013 FAFSA at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/  especially if there is any possibility that you may be appointed as a graduate assistant for 2012/2013 and/or if you wish to apply for federal loans.  Also, some external fellowships such as GAANN, Javits and Gates are needs-based and require applicants and recipients to file the FAFSA.
