A great advisor is important to your academic and, later, your professional success. If yours sets an example (or you know of an advisor who does), they should be spotlighted for going above and beyond the call of duty. That’s why TGS has the Clarence L.  Ver Steeg Graduate Faculty and Staff Awards: to recognize a faculty or staff member’s dedication to graduate students.  Winners receive $3,000, a certificate of recognition, and will also be honored at the PhD and MFA Hooding Ceremony in June.

Mark your calendars for June 30, 2012!  TGS Student-parents, Postdoc-parents and their children are invited to enjoy spring at Morton Arboretum in Lisle, IL on Saturday, June 30, from 10:00am to 3:00pm.  Families will have access to all of Morton Arboretums gardens, grounds and trails, including The Children's Garden, Backyard Discovery Gardens, and Adventure Woods.  A tram tour for parents and their children as well as lunch will be provided.  Registration will be required.  An invitation to register will be sent out on Monday, June 4 with a registration deadline of Monday, June 18 at 5:00pm.

The 2012 Scientific Images Contest is looking for entries.  This competition is sponsored by the Science in Society, Northwestern’s Office for Science Outreach and Public Engagement, and features cash prizes for the top 5 entries.  2011 1st and 3rd place went to energy entries.

The Career Development Grant Program for Humanists and Social Scientists is intended to facilitate doctoral students’ next professional steps after graduate school be they on the conventional academic path or not.  The awards can be used to cover costs directly related to a job search, such as travel to conferences or other venues to interview or for items such as production costs for job market materials (Interfolio or other dossier services).

Art Theory & Practice MFA candidate Madsen Minax has been awarded a two-year fellowship at the prestigious Core Program, a post-graduate artist residency program run by the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Madsen starts his residency this September.

Northwestern's fifth annual queer and trans studies conference, Sexing the Law: Love as/at the Limit, will take place from May 25-27, 2012. With keynote speakers Andrea J. Ritchie and Theodore W. Jennings and roundtable speakers from the Transformative Justice Law Project, this conference is shaping up to be the best "Queertopia!" yet!

The International Research Experiences for Students (IRES) program supports development of globally-engaged U.S. science and engineering students capable of performing in an international research environment at the forefront of science and engineering. The IRES program supports active research participation by students enrolled as undergraduates or graduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation.

Current PhD or MFA students not being hooded this year are invited to volunteer at the Hooding Ceremony on June 14. Volunteers attend one planning meeting and assist with the ceremony from 2:00 -5:00 PM. Volunteers may attend the hooding ceremony without a ticket as well as the reception that follows. Interested volunteers should contact Patty Delgado.

The Graduate School has established a Professional Development Grant to support meaningful graduate student and postdoctoral fellow professional development programming at the program/department level. Grants fund program, cluster, and student/postdoc efforts to offer professional development programming. This includes any activity that provides professional development relevant to the preparation of graduate students and postdocs for their future careers, whether inside or outside of academia. View additional information and application instructions.

Current graduate students in their second year who have shown exceptional scientific talent and who have committed to a specific research project in the area of nanoscience and technology may be nominated by their program for the Ryan Fellowship. The deadline for programs to submit current student nominees' applications to the Graduate School is May 18, 2012.  (Students should check with their Director of Graduate Studies or Chair for the program’s internal deadline).
