Funding Opportunities for Underrepresented Minority Students

There are a number of external fellowship opportunities specifically offered to underrepresented minority students. In addition to these opportunities, applications are also available in The Graduate School for the Ford Foundation Doctoral Fellowships for Minorities, the National Science Foundation Minority Graduate Fellowships, and the National Hispanic Scholarship Fund. GEM MS Engineering Fellowships
Applicants must be seeking the master's degree in engineering.  Each awardee receives a stipend and full tuition. Information on the GEM MS Engineering Fellowship program may be obtained from the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research, Robert R. GEM PhD Engineering Fellowships
Applicants must have earned or be working toward the master's degree in engineering and be admitted to a doctoral program in engineering.  Each award guarantees five years of financial support, including a twelve-month stipend, tuition, and fees. There is no summer internship obligation. The first year's stipend is provided by GEM and may be supplemented by the admitting institution. The balance of the award is provided by the admitting institution.

GEM Ph. Science Program
Applicants must be juniors, seniors, or baccalaureate degree recipients in an accredited engineering or science discipline. Each award guarantees five years of financial support, including a twelve-month stipend, tuition, and fees. There is a summer internship obligation. The first year's stipend is provided by GEM and may be supplemented by the admitting institution. The balance of the award is provided by the admitting institution/department.

Diversifying Higher Education Faculty in Illinois (DFI )
Applicants must be residents of the State of Illinois and intend to seek faculty positions in the State of Illinois upon completion of their degrees. To be classified as an Illinois resident, an applicant must have received a high school diploma or post-secondary degree from an educational institution in Illinois or be a registered voter in Illinois with three or more years of residency in Illinois.
New and continuing eligible underrepresented minority students in master's or doctoral degree programs in any department within The Graduate School may apply for DFI awards.  Professional School (i.e., Medill School of Journalism, Medical School or Law School) students are not eligible for DFI awards.  DFI awards are need based and renewable for up to three years. The Graduate School provides tuition scholarships for full-time students who have received DFI awards.

National Physical Science Consortium
Applicants must either be completing a master's degree at an institution that does not have a Ph.D. program in the discipline or possess a degree and have been out of school at least one year. NOTE: Any student currently enrolled in a master's or Ph.D. program at a Ph.D.-granting institution which offers a Ph.D. in the student's discipline is not eligible. Each award guarantees six years of financial support for doctoral students in astronomy, chemistry, computer science, geology, materials science, mathematical sciences, and physics. The Graduate School provides tuition scholarships for full-time minority students who have received NPSC awards.
