Program and Curriculum Changes

The Graduate School oversees doctoral and academic master's programs and curriculum as well as the curricula of MFA programs in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences and School of Communication.

The Graduate Curriculum Review chart summarizes which kinds of proposals require approval by school/college curriculum committees; The Graduate School; review by the graduate faculty; and/or final approval by TGS's Administrative Board. In all cases, review by school/college curriculum committees or TGS would be the first step.

NEW DEGREES, CLUSTERS, AND CERTIFICATES

Proposals for new or revised degrees, clusters, and certificates must be submitted to TGS using the appropriate template. This includes:

COURSE ADDITIONS, DELETIONS, OR MODIFICATIONS

The procedure to add, modify, or delete courses for graduate credit varies by school. In most cases, these should be submitted to school/college curriculum committees. The following proposals require approval of The Graduate School and its Administrative Board:

Programs in the following schools should work directly with the curriculum committee for that school in order to propose new courses or changes to already-existing courses:

  • Feinberg School of Medicine
  • Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music
  • McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science
  • School of Communication
  • Kellogg School of Management
  • School of Education and Social Policy
  • Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences (see the New Course Proposal website)

The Office of the Registrar provides a quarterly class schedule proof to programs. Programs are responsible for reflecting the graduate curriculum on their own program website. The Graduate School does not list courses for each program.

STEPS FOR SUBMISSION, REVIEW, AND APPROVAL OF PROPOSALS

The Graduate School accepts proposals and modification requests throughout the year. Please bear in mind, however, that proposals coming before TGS's Administrative Board will most likely need to be submitted twelve weeks before the scheduled quarterly meetings. Proposals will be dealt with at the second administrative board meeting of fall and winter quarters and the only meeting in spring quarter. For meeting dates, contact TGSAdminBoard@northwestern.edu.
