Before you begin the Graduate Application for Admission, please review the information below.
The Graduate School's Academic Programs:
Before starting the application process, please be sure to check The Graduate School's academic program list. Only the programs on this list are administered through The Graduate School. A number of professional degrees (for example, the master of business administration, master of sports administration, master and doctor of music, doctor of audiology, doctor of medicine, and a variety of engineering, law, and journalism degrees) are not conferred by The Graduate School, but by the respective professional schools: the Feinberg School of Medicine, Kellogg School of Management, Medill School of Journalism, McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, School of Communication, School of Education and Social Policy, School of Law, Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music, and School of Continuing Studies. If you would like to apply to a program outside the purview of The Graduate School, you should not use The Graduate School's online application. For application information, please contact these schools directly.
Academic Requirements:
Admitted students must hold a U.S. bachelor’s degree, or a comparable non-U.S. degree, from a regionally accredited institution. The Graduate School will accept applications from international students with 3-year bachelor's degrees. You may be considered for admission before you finish your undergraduate degree, but you must have the degree in hand before you matriculate.
Attributes of the Successful Applicant:
As an applicant for graduate study, your scholastic record should show evidence of distinction, breadth and appropriate preparation for advanced study in your selected field. Typically, GRE scores of admitted students are above 600 on both the Verbal and Quantitative sections. Analytical Writing scores are generally 5 or above on the 6-point scale. In most cases, admitted students have earned well above a 3.0 undergraduate GPA.
New
If you are applying to Northwestern as a graduate student for the first time, you should use The Graduate School's online application. Any supplimental materials required by your department (transcripts, hard copies of letters or recommendation, etc.) should be mailed directly to your admitting department.
Readmission
Students that have been admitted to TGS but are not registered for more than two terms will be withdrawn from the university and must apply for readmission through Student Services using the Application for Readmission. The decision to readmit a former student is at the discretion of the program. Please contact Student Services with questions.
Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree Program
The Graduate School (TGS) offers academically strong, motivated Northwestern University undergraduate students the opportunity to pursue a concurrent, combined bachelor’s/master's degree program. This program is restricted to Northwestern University undergraduates and limited to certain degree programs within the University. Bachelor's/Master's applicants do not use The Graduate School's online application to apply. Applicants to the combined bachelor's/master's program follow a distint application process and should consult the bachelor's/master's website for more detailed instructions.
Non-degree
If you are applying for admission as a nondegree seeking student through The Graduate School, you will need to submit The Graduate School’s Online Application. If you are applying as a nondegree seeking student through The School of Continuing Studies' Office of Special Students, you will not need to complete The Graduate School's application.
The online application is available each application cycle beginning the first week of October.
Please be sure to read the application instructions thoroughly and to check with your department for additional information. Many departments accept students for the fall semester only. Remember that all supplemental application materials (transcripts, hard copies of letters or recommendation, etc.) should be sent to your department directly.
The Graduate School only allows applicants to submit one application per year. For example, if you submitted an application for Fall quarter 2009, the earliest you may apply again is for Fall quarter 2010. Applicants may not apply to more than one program per year nor may applicants apply to the same program multiple times within one year.
Duplicate applications will not be reviewed and application fees can not be refunded.
All materials submitted in support of your application become the property of the University and will not be returned or forwarded.
The Graduate School also reserves the right to admit or deny admission whenever it believes that it has sufficient evidence to do so.
You must submit an application fee when you apply. The application fee is $75 and is not refundable. All application fees must be paid via credit card. Please be aware that paying the application fee is not the final step in the online application process. Once you provide your credit card payment, the application will direct you to the final “Signature Page" of the online application. Please be sure to click “Submit” on the “Signature Page”, only then will your application be submitted.
Questions regarding admission (Deadlines, Admission Requirements, Application Materials, Application Status, etc) should be directed to your individual admitting department. Contact information for The Graduate School's departments is available via the Program Contact List.
Departments set their own application deadlines. Please be sure to review your department’s website to determine your department’s application deadline. Late applications are not guaranteed review and application fees cannot be refunded.
