Program Description

The Department of Sociology has made a commitment to research and teaching in three substantive specialized areas: social organization, institutions, and social movements; social inequality, labor markets, race, and gender; and comparative and historical sociology. Beginning graduate students are expected to have had preparation in sociology or related social sciences. A student whose undergraduate preparation is inadequate may be required to make up such deficiencies.

Students in this program are also encouraged to participate in TGS’s Interdisciplinary Initiative program. For more information on how you can have a second intellectual “home” outside of your department or program please visit the Interdisciplinary Initiative page.

Applicants should contact the program or see Web site www.cas.northwestern.edu/sociology/graduate to learn about program-specific requirements for admission.
