PhD Degree Requirements

The following requirements are in addition to, or further elaborate upon, those requirements outlined in the Current Students section of this Web site.

Coursework Requirements

Courses: Units
POLI SCI 403 Introduction to Probability and Statistics*: 1
POLI SCI 405 Linear Models*: 1
Courses approved by the Director of Graduate Studies: 16
Total Required Units: 18

*(Political Theory students are exempt from the requirement to take POLI SCI 403 and 405.)

Other PhD Degree Requirements

  • Examinations: written qualifying examinations on student's major and minor fields, plus third field coverage through coursework Research/Projects: major scholarly paper in second year
  • PhD Dissertation: dissertation research design presented during quarter after passing qualifying examination; dissertation based on independent research
  • Final Evaluations: oral defense of dissertation
  • Other: teaching experience in second year in undergraduate course (unless prior college-level teaching experience)
