PhD Degree Requirements

The following requirements are in addition to, or further elaborate upon, those requirements outlined in the Study at NU section of this Web site.

Coursework Requirements Other PhD Degree Requirements

  • Language: One of the combinations below; courses do not carry credit toward the degree
    Competence in a second language other than English
    Completion of a course in advanced logic (200 level or above)
    Work in a related discipline (Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Mathematics, etc) or a complimentary philosophical area
    Consultation with DGS on the necessary secondary skills for student’s course of study should be completed by the end of the first year
  • Proseminars:
    PHIL 401-1,2 Proseminar (first year): 2
    PHIL 402-1,2 Proseminar (second year): 2
  • History of Philosophy:
    400-level seminar in either Plato or Aristotle: 1
    400-level seminar in Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz, Hobbes, Locke, Berkeley, Hume, Kant, or Hegel: 1
  • Electives:
    Other philosophy courses (at least twelve at 400-level): 15
    Additional courses: 6
  • Logic:
    Basic competence in symbolic logic as demonstrated through coursework or examination
  • Total Required Units: 27

 Other PhD Degree Requirements

  • Examinations: oral qualifying examination to determine competence within chosen field of proposed dissertation
  • Research/Projects: two research papers related to the proseminars
  • PhD Dissertation: department approval of dissertation topic by three-member dissertation committee with oral qualifying examination as above
  • Final Evaluations: oral defense of dissertation
  • Other: annual review by faculty
