Program Description
The faculty of the Department of Philosophy conducts research in all the central areas of analytic and Continental philosophy and offers a philosophical education that spans both traditions. Special strengths of the department include history of philosophy, continental philosophy, social and political philosophy, and philosophy of language. Graduate study is restricted to PhD students, with the doctoral program designed around three goals: to train students historically and systematically, to foster the growth of philosophical skills, and to encourage broad and incisive exploration of individual interests. However, a student may receive the MA degree after two years of satisfactory work in the PhD program. The core requirements establish a flexible framework that allows the student to take advantage of the variety of research interests in the department during the first two years of study.
Students in this program are also encouraged to participate in TGS’s Interdisciplinary Initiative program. For more information on how you can have a second intellectual “home” outside of your department or program please visit the Interdisciplinary Initiative page.
Applicants should contact the program or see Web site www.cas.northwestern.edu/philosophy to learn about program-specific requirements for admission.
