Program Description

The Department of Neurobiology and Physiology is one of the two life sciences programs in the College of Arts and Sciences. Members of the department's faculty may have other affiliations as well, and accordingly, a student in the department has access to faculty expertise in numerous areas of research in addition to neurobiology, such as biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, biomedical engineering, chemistry, audiology, neurology, and psychology.

The department offers a one-year master's degree in Neurobiology and Physiology, in which core graduate courses in neuroscience and physiology (see below) are combined with research work with one of our faculty. In addition, the department is a member of the Northwestern University Institute for Neuroscience. The Institute offers the Ph.D. in Neuroscience, and doctoral students may work in one of its many participating departments, including the Department of Neurobiology and Physiology, for their dissertation research. The curriculum of the Institute is designed specifically to provide graduate students with a firm understanding of the fundamental principles of neuroscience.

Applicants should contact the program or see Web site www.northwestern.edu/neurobiology/ms to learn about program-specific requirements for admission.
