Other MA Degree Requirements

  • Examinations: successful completion of two research papers, normally by end of seventh quarter, for admission to candidacy; acceptable master's thesis in department may be offered as one of the papers
  • Research/Projects: completion of research papers (see above), plus completion of one credit of LING 550 Research Seminar in Linguistics in conjunction with this requirement
  • PhD Dissertation: none specified beyond the PhD degree requirements outlined in the Graduate Study at Northwestern University section of this Web site
  • Final Evaluations: none specified beyond the PhD degree requirements outlined in the Graduate Study at Northwestern University section of this Web site
  • Other: demonstration of advanced proficiency in one non-English language and intermediate proficiency in another non-English language (department assumes native or near-native proficiency in English); choice of languages must meet department guidelines of language diversity; in some cases, one additional course, for example, LING 319 or LING 320, may be required to extend student's language experience.
