Program Description
The Department of Linguistics offers programs leading to the MA and PhD degrees. Both programs provide students with a solid background in linguistic theory, from sound structure to discourse, with an emphasis on empirical and experimental methodologies. After receiving training in basic linguistic theory, students are provided with considerable flexibility in designing their own courses of study. We encourage students to pursue research topics that span more than one subfield of linguistics. Students also benefit from Northwestern’s strong interdisciplinary research environment.
Special interdisciplinary opportunities are available to PhD students through the Program in Language and Cognition and the PhD Specialization in Cognitive Science. (See Interdepartmental Degree Programs and Interdepartmental Specialization Programs in this Web site.)
Applicants should contact the program or see Web site www.wcas.northwestern.edu/linguistics to learn about program-specific requirements for admission.
