The following requirements are in addition to, or further elaborate upon, those requirements outlined in the Current Students section of this Web site

Other PhD Degree Requirements

  • Examinations: up to three foreign languages, as relevant; general-, specialization-, and minor-field examinations; year-end examinations (see department guide); for admission to candidacy, three required substantive examinations, in any order (usual pattern is minor field, general field, and specialization), but must adhere to department's schedule for meeting requirements for admission to candidacy (see department guide)
  • PhD Dissertation: presentation of acceptable dissertation and passing final examination on dissertation and related materials
  • Final Evaluations: defense of dissertation
  • Other: minor field must be defined by written contract between student and supervising department member by end of winter quarter of first year; specialization field must be defined in written contract between student and advisory committee by end of fall quarter of second year
