CLASSICS 322 Ancient Greek Law (1) Procedural and substantive law, chiefly of democratic Athens, from both historical and juridic perspectives.

CLASSICS 330 Ancient Economy (1) Introduction to the pre-industrial, Mediterranean economies of ancient Greece and Rome. Farming, transportation, settlement patterns, capitalism, trade, and slavery.

CLASSICS 342 Early European Medicine (1) Greco-Roman origins of European medical thought from the cult of Asclepius to Galen. Emphasis on ethical ideas and underlying strengths and weaknesses of Greek science.

CLASSICS 345 Greek Tragedy (1) Readings in the plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. Emphasis on social and institutional contexts of Greek theater and its shaping power for the history of Western drama.

CLASSICS 348 Roman Comedy (1) Readings in the plays of Plautus and Terence. Emphasis on dramatic and linguistic style.

CLASSICS 390 Topics in Greco-Roman Civilization (1) Content varies; sample topics include music and the city, origins of democracy, Herodotus and the Invention of History, and the Games of Venus.

CLASSICS 440 Theatre in Rome and the Early Christian Empire (1) In this course, we will trace the history of theatre in the Roman and early Christian periods. We will concentrate on key moments and specific plays in an effort to untangle the changing social role of theatre in the Roman Republic, Empire and early Christian era.

CLASSICS 460 Classical Mythology (1) Through a reading of primary texts of classical literature, this course introduces contemporary methods of interpreting mythology, from history and ritual to structuralism, psychoanalysis, and semiotics. All readings are in English. Prerequisite: permission of instructor.

GREEK 301 Readings in Greek Literature (1) Selected Greek authors and topics, arranged in a three-year cycle. Samples: Homer, Iliad and Odyssey; the Homeric Hymns; and Hesiod; early lyric; Pindar; Herodotus; Thucydides; Demosthenes; the Prometheus myth in Greek poetry; selected tragedies; Aristophanes, selected comedies; Plato, Symposium and Phaedrus.

GREEK 410 Graduate Readings in Greek Literature (1) A closely directed tutorial in selected authors and genres of classical Greek literature.

GREEK 499 Independent Study ) (1, 2, or 3) Permission of instructor and department required.

GREEK 590 Research (1, 2, or 3) Independent investigation of selected problems pertaining to thesis or dissertation. May be repeated for credit.

Latin
LATIN 310 Readings in Latin Literature (1)
Chief works of Latin literature, arranged in a three-year cycle. Samples: Plautus and Terence; Lucretius; Cicero; Virgil, Eclogues and Georgics; Virgil, Aeneid VII-XII; Horace, Satires and Epistles; Augustan Elegy; Ovid, Metamorphoses; Petronius and Apuleius; Juvenal and Persius; Seneca, Letters and Essays; Tacitus, Annales.

LATIN 401 Graduate Readings in Latin Literature (1) Tutorial in selected authors and genres of classical and medieval Latin literature.

LATIN 499 Independent Study (1, 2, or 3) May be repeated for credit. Permission of instructor and department required.

LATIN 590 Research (1, 2, or 3) Independent investigation of selected problems pertaining to thesis or dissertation. May be repeated for credit.
