Program Description
Art History at Northwestern University is a focused doctoral program for students with a solid undergraduate grounding in the field. Students are admitted on the basis of their preparation in this area and on the faculty's analysis of the student's research writing. Coursework moves from a general, conceptual survey of the discipline to a more specific exploration of the student's field. Courses in other departments or those offered through the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) program may be taken if appropriate. Students are trained for either teaching or museum positions.
The expectations of the department are high, and faculty evaluations are important to the student's continuation in the program. In special cases where coursework is necessary beyond the third year of residence, students may take additional courses as auditors. The following are major and minor fields offered within the program:
- Ancient
- European
- Medieval
- Renaissance
- Baroque
- Modern
- American
- African
- Asian
Students in this program are also encouraged to participate in TGS’s Interdisciplinary Initiative program. For more information on how you can have a second intellectual “home” outside of your department or program please visit the Interdisciplinary Initiative page.
Applicants should contact the program or see Web site www.wcas.northwestern.edu/arthistory to learn about program-specific requirements for admission.
