HDSP 302 Human Development: Adulthood and Aging (1): Psychological, sociological, and biological factors influencing socialization and development from young and middle adulthood to old age. Influences of family, school, and work on the individual.

HDSP 303 Administration and Policy Studies (1): Education and human development as a multi-institutional, ecological, and macrosociological phenomenon. Issues in the philosophy, history, economics, and politics of education.

HDSP 310 Legal Aspects of Education (1): The structure of school governance, decision making, and the relevant state and federal legislation affecting public schooling.

HDSP 311 The Political Economy of Social Policy (1): American social policy from a cross-national comparative perspective; historical development of social policy in the Western world; three perspectives on the crisis of the welfare state.

HDSP 312 Development of African-American Children and Families: Theory and Research (1): African-American children and families from a holistic, multidisciplinary, developmental perspective. Phases in child and family life cycles linked to ecological factors in the society. Historical-evolutionary approach.

HDSP 313 Development of African-American Children and Families: Research and Social Policy (1): Educational and human service policy-related concerns of African-Americans and contemporary social policies that affect them. Developmental, educational, and sociopsychological research.

HDSP 314 The Role of Play in the Development of the Child (1): Play behavior and the psychological development of the child. Play's function in the motor, cognitive, social, and emotional development of the child.

HDSP 315 Urban Education (1): Problems of urban education; special attention to prospects for reforming urban school systems.

HDSP 341 Statistics and Policy (1): Uses of statistics in education and social policy. Prototypical examples, both good and bad. Prerequisites: At least one statistics course.

HDSP 362-1,2 Topics in Research Design, Data Collection, and Analysis (1)(1): Introduction to research models and techniques; various research designs (nonexperimental, experimental, and survey) and data collection procedures (structured observation, life history, testing, questionnaire design, and interviewing).

HDSP 398 Student-Organized Seminar (1): Graduate and undergraduate students initiate courses not covered in the school's curriculum, under the supervision of sponsoring faculty members. Student plans must be approved in accordance with procedures found in the SESP Office of Student Affairs. Only one enrollment per quarter. Pass/no-credit basis.

HDSP 402 Child Development (1): Major theories and current empirical research concerning cognitive and social/emotional development of children. Interaction of internal maturational factors with effects of families, peers, and schools.

HDSP 403 Adolescent Development (1): Biological, cognitive, and social development during adolescence. Social institutions and policies that affect the well-being of adolescents.

HDSP 404 Adult Development and Aging (1): Concepts, theories, and research on development and adaptation from early adulthood through aging: age periods, transitions; cognitive, moral, and faith development; psychosocial and ego development; defense mechanisms; death and dying.

HDSP 406 Family Research, Policy and Intervention (1): Interdisciplinary seminar with multidisciplinary faculty exploring relationship between family research, policy and intervention. Focus on specific issue each year with invited faculty/student presentations.

HDSP 411 Human Development and the Family (1): Conceptual and theoretical perspectives on family research on intergenerational influences and relationships in families across the lifespan.

HDSP 412 Collective Bargaining and Labor Relations in Education (1): Labor-management relations in the educational setting.

HDSP 413 Theories of Human Development (1): Biological bases and interactions with the social and physical environments as sources of human development. Social, emotional, and cognitive aspects of development. Theorists include Bowlby, Erikson, Piaget, Vygotsky, Mead, and Gardner.

HDSP 414 Concepts and Methods in the Study of Lives (1): Theoretical roots and methodological implications of current approaches to the study of lives. Issues of continuity and discontinuity; micro and macro levels of analysis; "objective" and "subjective" accounts.

HDSP 415 Understanding the Person (1): Psychological ways to comprehend persons in social and historical context. Personality functioning, dynamics, and adjustment from psychoanalytic, psychosocial, cognitive, behavioral, humanistic, and narrative perspectives.

HDSP 416 Families and Schooling (1): Theory and research on family influences on achievement development; models of the home learning environment; parent involvement in schools.

HDSP 420 The Aging Society and Social Policy (1): Impetus for, rationale behind, and assumptions underlying federal aging policy. Impact of different social policies on adult socialization and development.

HDSP 427 Social Opportunity and Educational Policy (1): Conflicts between offering opportunity to youth and societal imperatives for selecting and preparing youth for future careers; how society and schools deal with this conflict. Approaches to policy reform.

HDSP 429 Social-Community Interventions (1): Design and implementation of social systems interventions in organizations and communities, especially preventive applications in human service agencies and institutions.

HDSP 430 Economics of Social Policy (1): Economic context for social policy (economic crisis, unemployment, poverty); household economics; labor market theory and studies; economic rationales for social policy.

HDSP 432 Field Methods and Social Policy (1): The contribution of ethnography to the study of social policy. Strengths and weaknesses of this method for study of governmental programs' impact on clients and participants.

HDSP 433 Modern Theories of the State and Social Policy (1): Recent theories of social policy in the context of the welfare state. Analysis of alternative theories and their implications for contemporary problems in social policy.

HDSP 434 Poverty and Public Policy (1): Contemporary issues in urban poverty, including analysis of employment training, education reform, economic development, and government transfer and tax policies. The interconnected nature of institutional, economic, political, and social efforts toward urban reform.

HDSP 437 Child Development and Social Policy (1): Integrating child development research with social policy initiatives. Overview of role of social sciences in formation of public policy regarding children and families.

HDSP 438 Adolescent Development and Social Policy (1): Domestic policy concerns related to adolescent development. International comparisons.

HDSP 439 Adult Development and Social Policy (1): Historical developments and current trends in US social policies that affect adults through the life course.

HDSP 440 The Politics of Public Policy (1): Framework for understanding the structure and process of development. How existing social policies can be analyzed and new policies developed.

HDSP 442 Systematically Collected Data and Their Relationship to Policy (1): Identification of national, state, and local databases relevant to policy: their content, statistical quality, and accessibility assessment. Selection and use of databases for policy development, analysis, and evaluation.

HDSP 443 Philosophical and Historical Context of Policy (1): Philosophical and historical roots of language used to describe issues in social policy. Topics include client self-determination versus professional autonomy, appropriate levels of financial support for the poor, state intervention, and the balance between liberty and social justice.

HDSP 444 Law, Education, and Social Policy (1): Legal context of education and social policy. Legislation, case law, and regulations at state and federal levels relevant to the organization and operation of schools: civil rights, teacher employment relations, tort liability, church/state/ school issues, and emerging problems in educational policy analysis.

HDSP 445 Education and Work (1): Changes in the employment system and postsecondary education in the United States; relationship between education and work in the United States and in various countries.

HDSP 590 Research in Human Development and Social Policy (1-3) : Independent investigation of selected problems pertaining to thesis or dissertation. May be repeated for credit.
