Program DescriptionStudents admitted to the PhD program in Music pursue coursework in one of three fields: music theory/cognition, music education, and musicology. While some of the coursework is specified and required, each curriculum allows for considerable flexibility and electives. Studies in closely related areas, such as in pedagogy or cognition, and interdisciplinary work outside the department are encouraged.
Specific curricula are designed in consultation with the faculty and are intended to prepare the student for original research in music and for the completion of the dissertation on an approved topic. Recommended curricula aim for a balance of strengths among specialized studies, interdisciplinary work, and guided preparation for the pedagogical and professional demands of today's academy. Students entering the program with a master's degree normally require two years of full-time study to complete the coursework; those entering with a bachelor's degree require three.
Students in this program are also encouraged to participate in TGS’s Interdisciplinary Initiative program. For more information on how you can have a second intellectual "home" outside of your department or program please visit the Interdisciplinary Initiative page.
Applicants should contact the program or see Web site www.music.northwestern.edu to learn about program-specific requirements for admission.
