PhD Degree Requirements

The following requirements are in addition to, or further elaborate upon, those requirements outlined in the Student Services section of this Web site.

Courses equivalent to MS degree in Mechanical Engineering (not including MECH ENG 499 Project for MS) 9
MECH ENG 512 Seminar (required in all quarters of full-time registration) 0
MECH ENG 513 Teaching Practicum (required one quarter) 0
Electives (advisor-approved; minimum of six must be 400-level
minor of three courses in subarea outside main research area or outside Mechanical Engineering)

Total required units: (Minimum of 18 units after the BS All coursework must be for a grade, excluding projects and thesis.)

Other PhD Degree Requirements

  • Examinations: qualifying examination prior to admission to candidacy
  • Research/Projects: research of publishable quality, in close cooperation with faculty advisor, as basis for Ph.D. dissertation
  • PhD Dissertation: based on research projects
  • Final Evaluations: oral presentation of dissertation to candidate's advisory committee
