Program Description
The Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences graduate program leads to a PhD degree. Areas of study include Stochastic Modeling and Analysis, Optimization, Financial Engineering, Production and Logistics, Decision and Risk Analysis, Applied Statistics and Quality Engineering, and Organization Theory and Systems Analysis. Graduate programs are tailored to meet the needs of individual students and may include work in related departments. Close association is maintained with other departments in the Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Department of Statistics in the Judd A. and Marjorie Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, Kellogg School of Management, Feinberg School of Medicine, Transportation Center, Manufacturing Institute, Institute for Policy Research, Center for Health Services and Policy Research, and Optimization Technology Center.

The graduate program prepares students for research-based careers in industry, academia, and government. Students are accepted with either the bachelor's or master's degree in a relevant discipline. Students normally receive an MS degree after the first year of study. The PhD degree typically requires an additional 3 to 4 years of coursework and dissertation research.

Applicants should visit the website at www.iems.northwestern.edu  to learn about program-specific requirements and procedures for admission.

Within the Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences offers two professional programs not administered through The Graduate School. These are the Master of Engineering Management (MEM) and Master of Management and Manufacturing (MMM) programs.

The Master of Engineering Management Program is a 12-course program is designed for engineers and technical professionals moving into positions of greater managerial responsibility. The MEM program integrates business and engineering courses to provide leadership and organizational skills, a broad view of the workings of the firm, and quantitative tools to support managerial decisions. Classes are held weekday evenings in Evanston and Schaumburg. Students may attend part-time or full-time; nondegree options are available. Three year' work experience and strong academic performance are required for admission. Information about the MEM Program may be obtained from the MEM office at 847-491-5584 or at Web site www.mem.northwestern.edu

The Master of Management and Manufacturing Program is a full-time, two year curriculum jointly administered by the Kellogg School of Management and the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science. Graduates receive both the MBA degree from Kellogg and the MEM (Master of Engineering Management) degree from McCormick. The curriculum consists of a management core, a manufacturing core, and electives, with which students can pursue a wide range of specialties in management, engineering or both. Graduates are well-equipped for careers involving leadership in product-oriented enterprises, as well as consulting, entrepreneurship and other careers related to manufacturing. The success of MMM alums has created a large and distinguished professional network that serves as a powerful resource for current students and graduates. Admission to the program is highly competitive; a strong academic background in engineering or other technical field, plus significant work experience relevant to manufacturing, are required. Information about the MMM Program is available from the MMM office at 847-467-1061 or at Web site www.mmm.northwestern.edu.
