Program DescriptionThe Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences graduate program leads to a PhD degree. Areas of study include Stochastic Modeling and Analysis, Optimization, Financial Engineering, Production and Logistics, Decision and Risk Analysis, Applied Statistics and Quality Engineering, and Organization Theory and Systems Analysis. Graduate programs are tailored to meet the needs of individual students and may include work in related departments. Close association is maintained with other departments in the Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Department of Statistics in the Judd A. and Marjorie Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, Kellogg School of Management, Feinberg School of Medicine, Transportation Center, Manufacturing Institute, Institute for Policy Research, Center for Health Services and Policy Research, and Optimization Technology Center.
The graduate program prepares students for research-based careers in industry, academia, and government. Students are accepted with either the bachelor's or master's degree in a relevant discipline. Students normally receive an MS degree after the first year of study. The PhD degree typically requires an additional 3 to 4 years of coursework and dissertation research.
Applicants should visit the Web site at www.iems.northwestern.edu to learn about program-specific requirements and procedures for admission.
Within the Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences offers two professional programs not administered through The Graduate School. These are the Master of Engineering Management (MEM) and Master of Management and Manufacturing (MMM) programs.
Faculty The primary appointment for those faculty with joint or affiliate status in another program is noted in parentheses.
