Program Description

The Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) Department offers a wide variety of programs of study leading to the MS and PhD degrees in Computer Science (CS) and in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE).  The broad interdisciplinary interests of our faculty mean that there is a lot of overlap in the two degrees.  Please visit the EECS Web site for a detailed description of the areas of focus within the EECS department.  The selection of a particular degree (CS or ECE) does not in any way limit a graduate student's course of study; students will choose courses based on their interests and career goals.  When applying to the PhD or MS program, students should specify one or a limited number of research areas (by selecting the appropriate research divisions), so that the application may be reviewed by the appropriate faculty.  Applicants are expected to have adequate background to pursue research in their areas of interest.

The Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department participates in the Master's Program in Information Technology. Information on that program may be obtained by calling 847-491-5931. The Department also participates in the MS and PhD degree programs in Learning Sciences, and the Cognitive Science specialization. For details, refer to the Learning Sciences and Cognitive Science section on this site.

Applicants should contact the program or see Web site http://www.eecs.northwestern.edu to learn about program-specific requirements for admission.
