Program DescriptionThe Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) Department offers a wide variety of programs of study leading to the MS and PhD degrees in Computer Science (CS) and in Electrical and Computer Enginering (ECE). The broad intersisciplinary interests of our faculty means that there is a lot of overlap in the two degrees. Please visit the EECS Web site for a detailed description of the areas of focus within the EECS department. The selection of a particular degree (CS or ECE) does not in any way limit a graduate student's course of study; students will choose courses based on their interests and career goals. When applying to the PhD or MS program, students should specify one or a limited number of research areas (by selecting the appropriate research divisions), so that the application may be reviewed by the appropriate faculty. Applicants are expected to have adequate background to pursue research in their areas of interest.
Courses and research are highly interdisciplinary, with particularly strong connections to education, psychology, and communication, both in shared faculty and joint research projects. The department also participates in the MS and/or PhD degree programs in Learning Sciences, Cognitive Science, and Technology and Social Behavior. For details, refer to the Learning Sciences, Cognitive Science, and Technology and Social Behavior sections on this site.
Applicants should contact the program or see Web site www.eecs.northwestern.edu/admissions/graduate/ to learn about program-specific requirements for admission.
Faculty The primary appointment for those faculty with joint or affiliate status in another program is noted in parentheses.
