Program Description
The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering offers programs designed to provide the student with a strong background in the fundamentals of modern chemical engineering theory and practice. On the basis of consultation between the student and advisor, a course program is designed to cover the fundamentals of chemical engineering science and technology through distribution requirements and to allow for individual specialization in particular areas of interest through elective courses within and outside the department. In addition to coursework, candidates for the PhD are expected to pursue a research investigation in collaboration with a faculty member and to prepare an acceptable written document; thesis research is optional for the MS degree. The purpose of this activity is to enable the student to define and solve a research problem at the frontiers of chemical engineering and to gain fundamental knowledge in the area of interest. Current topics under investigation in the department include computer-aided engineering and design, catalysis, reaction engineering, polymers, fluid mechanics and transport phenomena, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, complex systems, and environmental engineering.
Applicants should contact the program or see Web site www.chem-biol-eng.northwestern.edu to learn about program-specific requirements for admission.
