Other PhD Degree Requirements

  • Examinations: students entering with BS degree must complete MS thesis within 24 months of matriculation, except by petition to faculty; MS thesis defense serves as exam for admission to candidacy for PhD; student may pass MS exam but not be admitted to candidacy for the PhD if examining committee determines that student should not continue; students entering with MS degree must complete PhD dissertation proposal within 24 months of matriculation, except by petition to faculty; dissertation proposal defense serves as exam for admission to candidacy for PhD
  • Research/Projects: before end of fall quarter, first-year students submit brief description of research interests and list of potential research advisers
  • PhD Dissertation: original, independent research
  • Final Evaluations: oral defense of dissertation when all other requirements completed
  • Other: teaching experience - one quarter as a Teaching Assistant or two quarters as a volunteer
