Program Description

The Program in Applied Mathematics, administered by the Department of Engineering Sciences and Applied Mathematics, educates students in mathematical methods, as well as in the application of those methods to various scientific and engineering fields. The emphasis is on techniques associated with asymptotic analysis, bifurcation theory, extended dynamic systems, integral equations, numerical analysis, ordinary and partial differential equations, singular perturbations, stability theory, and stochastic processes. These techniques are employed in the solution of problems arising in chemical physics, combustion theory, diffusion processes, fiber optics, fluid mechanics, geophysics, interfacial phenomena, pattern formation, neurobiology, porous media, solid mechanics, solidification theory, viscoplasticity, vorticity dynamics, and wave phenomena. Students are given broad-based training encompassing mathematical methods and fields of science or engineering where significant applications of mathematics are made.

Applicants should contact the program or see the Web site to learn about program-specific requirements for admission.
