The Kellogg School of Management is a professional school within the University. Kellogg offers five doctoral programs through The Graduate School: Accounting information and Management; Finance; Management and Organizations; Managerial Economics and Strategy; and Marketing. Additionally, the Department of Management and Organizations has a joint doctoral program with the Department of Sociology in the Judd A. and Marjorie Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences. (See Management and Organizations and Sociology program page of this Web site.)

Kellogg does not offer a master of science (MS) program. However, students pursuing the PhD who did not receive residency credit due to a previously earned graduate degree may be considered for the MS after completion of their first two years of study. Please consult individual program listings for discipline-specific requirements for the MS degree.

Applicants seeking the master of business administration (MBA) degree apply through the Kellogg School of Management and are candidates for that degree only. For information on that degree, contact the Kellogg Office of Admissions and Financial Aid by e-mail at MBAadmissions@kellogg.northwestern.edu or by telephone at 847-491-3308.

The following requirements are in addition to, or further elaborate upon, those requirements outlined in the Current Students section of this Web site.

General PhD Degree Requirements

Admission Qualifications
See specific Kellogg program qualifications.

Coursework Requirements
Entering students who have been granted three quarters of residency credit for a graduate degree can normally meet minimum residency requirements for the PhD in six quarters. Students enrolling with a bachelor’s degree follow similar study plans, but they need additional quarters of coursework to acquire the necessary general background; their minimum residency requirement is nine quarters. Students take four courses per quarter until they begin their dissertations. All courses are taken for grades; pass/no pass is not permitted. Students usually complete the degree requirements in four to five years.

Each entering student is assigned a program advisor who helps plan coursework that gives the student a broad knowledge in the fundamental scholarly disciplines used in management research and in the functional areas of management.

In addition to the introductory and advanced coursework requirements below, see specific Kellogg program coursework requirements.

Introductory Coursework Requirements
The requirements below may be satisfied by appropriate prior work or by coursework at Northwestern University; they should be completed as soon as possible.

  • Quantitative Methods: familiarity with differential and integral calculus and linear algebra; students urged to acquire this competency before entry into program; those with deficiencies must take undergraduate mathematics (without graduate credit)
  • Economics: one course in either microeconomic theory or macroeconomic theory at intermediate undergraduate or introductory graduate level
  • Behavioral Science: one course in either organizational theory or a classical behavioral science discipline, such as psychology
  • Functional Areas: students with MBA or equivalent have met minimum requirements of functional areas; others must take one course in at least two functional areas outside the major department, selected from accounting, finance, marketing, management strategy, and operations management

Advanced Coursework Requirements
The requirements below may be satisfied by graduate-level courses at Northwestern University; they provide students with structure, depth, and breadth of preparation necessary for scholarly research.

  • Quantitative Methods: solid grounding in probability and statistics attained from at least a two-course, graduate-level sequence; strongly recommended: MKTG 476 and MECS 477 (Introduction to Applied Econometrics 1,2) and/or ECON 481-1,2 (Introduction to Econometrics).
  • Economics or Behavioral Science: advanced understanding of economics or of behavioral sciences by completing two graduate courses in Economics, Psychology, Sociology, or Management and Organizations; in Economics, courses are ECON 410-1,2 Microeconomics or MECS 469-1 Advanced Applied Microeconomics, ECON 411-1,2 Macroeconomics; in behavioral science, courses are MORS 424-1 The Individual and the Organization, MORS 424-2 Social Processes in Organizations; MORS 425-1 Behavior in Organization Systems, and MORS 425-2 Organizations in Their Environments; or relevant 500-level seminars in Psychology or Sociology
  • Major Field: major-field requirements determined by each department; consist of department Ph.D. courses, seminars, and additional courses needed to develop competence for scholarly research
  • Minor Field: minor-field requirements consist of three advanced courses in subject area related to, but different from, major field; courses are in addition to those used to satisfy all other requirements
  • Teaching/Research Assistance: satisfactory development in the practice of both teaching and research; experiences coordinated by department advisor

Other General PhD Degree Requirements
In addition to the requirements listed below, see specific requirements of the individual Kellogg programs.

  • Preliminary Examination: written preliminary examination in the major field required; frequently at the end of first year, but timing may vary from program to program
  • Qualifying Examinations: after completing most coursework and written preliminary examination, student must pass oral qualifying examination in which student proposes dissertation topic or any other substantial piece of research and discusses its significance to the development of knowledge, the research methods to be used, and any preliminary results. The exam must occur by the beginning of the fall quarter of the fourth year.
  • Oral Qualifying Examination Committee: at least four faculty members, no fewer than three Kellogg faculty and at least one committee member from outside the student's program; committee chair and at least one other member from the Graduate Faculty.
