GENET_CN 401 Introduction to Genetic Counseling (1): History of genetic counseling and clinical genetics, genetic counseling skills and process, eliciting patient histories, prenatal diagnosis counseling, introduction to diagnostic obstetric ultrasound, teratology, and high-risk obstetrics.
GENET_CN 402 Introduction to Clinical Genetics (1): Approaches to clinical genetics, dysmorphology, and a variety of genetic diseases; application of medical and genetic information to genetic counseling of families.
GENET_CN 403 Current Issues in Genetic Counseling (1): This course will examine legal, ethical, ethnocultural and other timely professional issues.
GENET_CN 404 Women's Health Issues in Genetic Counseling (1): Women's health issues will be discussed in the context of feminist theory. Possible topics include gender issues, childbearing, infertility, domestic violence, chemical dependence, and other topics.
GENET_CN 405 Topics in Genetics (1): Seminar for second year students on current topics in medical genetics and genetic counseling and on professional development.
GENET_CN 411 Psychosocial Aspects of Genetic Counseling (1): An introductory course to human psychological development and counseling/interviewing skills as applied to genetic counseling.
GENET_CN 412 Psychosocial Aspects of Genetic Counseling II: Clinical Issues throughout the Lifecycle (1): Builds on more theoretical coursework from earlier classes and examines normal and abnormal processes of pregnancy, prenatal diagnosis, birth of a child, and genetic disease for adolescents/adults.
GENET_CN 413 Advanced Genetic Counseling (1): Second-year seminar focusing on advanced counseling principles and skills.
GENET_CN 414 Developmental Disabilities: Impact on the Child and Family (1): Development and diagnosis of disabled children; impact on the family; psychological consequences of factors such as genetic risk, adoption, and special education needs.
GENET_CN 420-1 Principles of Human Genetics (1): Basic and complex principles of human heredity, including an introduction to cytogenetics, molecular technique and mathematical genetics.
GENET_CN 420-2 Teratogen Counseling and Cancer Genetics (1): Introduction to basic principles of teratology, known teratogens, and common exposures in pregnancy, and to various hereditary cancer symptoms and issued involved in genetic testing.
GENET_CN 420-3 Advanced Principles of Genetic Medicine (1): Biochemical genetics, immunology, pharmacogenetics, common adult genetic conditions and treatment of genetic disease.
GENET_CN 421 Research Seminar (1): Planning research projects, questionnaire development, research design, and approaches to clinical research.
GENET_CN 422 Genetics Journals Club (0): Regular meetings to review current genetics journals and present articles of interest relevant to clinical genetics.
GENET_CN 423 Genetics Patient Review (0): Students and faculty present cases of interest to discuss case management and genetic counseling issues.
GENET_CN 424 Genetic Lecture Series (0): Local or visiting speakers discuss ongoing research on "hot" topics in genetics. Students give formal presentations in their second year.
GENET_CN 425 Genetic Counseling for Complex Adult Genetic Conditions: Cancer Genetics and Beyond (1): This class will consider the various adult onset complex disorders, ways to obtain and interpret family history for complex adult conditions, specific genetic risk assessment approaches, and ways to communicate risk to families.
GENET_CN 499 Research Project (1-2): Development and presentation of a research project or case report in consultation with an advisory committee. Students will present a seminar on the project and prepare a paper that is expected to be submitted for publication and for presentation at a professional meeting.
GENET_CN 525 Clinical Rotations (1): Rotations through the Genetic Counseling Clinic at local hospitals during the winter and spring quarters of the first year and the fall quarter of the second year.
GENET_CN 530 Summer Clinical Rotations (3) : Two six-week, full-time summer rotations at clinical genetics centers in the Chicago metropolitan area.

Measures of disease occurrence, common sources and types of data, important study designs, and sources of error in epidemiologic studies and epidemiologic methods. (The Feinberg School of Medicine course MDM-2 may be substituted for this course.)
