CLIN_PSY 402 Psychological Assessment I (1): Introduction to psychological assessment, focusing on the psychometric formulations of modern testing and the clinical assessment of cognitive/intellectual functioning in adults.

CLIN_PSY 403 Psychological Assessment II (1): Personality assessment using objective psychological tests (primarily MMPI-2 and MMPI-A) and introduction to projective assessment with the TAT. Integration of test findings in written reports. Prerequisites: CLIN_PSY 402 or equivalent.

CLIN_PSY 404 Psychological Assessment III (1): Administration, scoring, and interpretation of the Rorschach (Exner system). Emphasis is on the psycho- metric aspects and secondarily upon projective aspects. Integration of cognitive and personality test results in written reports. Prerequisites: CLIN_PSY 403 or equivalent.

CLIN_PSY 406 Projective Testing with Adults (1): Projective technique in the context of full psychological test batteries, methods to analyze the resulting material, and the art of test-report writing. Test batteries supplied by instructor include protocols of young adults, middle-aged adults, and those in later life.

CLIN_PSY 407 Child Psychological Assessment (1): Child and family psychological assessment techniques. Topics covered include child intellectual and cognitive assessment, personality assessment, and behavioral assessment of childhood disorders and family dysfunction.

CLIN_PSY 410 Psychodynamic Tradition I (1): Psychoanalytic theories and concepts; their impact upon contemporary thought, theory, and clinical practice. Recent developments and applications reviewed in the light of current evidence and criticism.

CLIN_PSY 411 History and Systems of Psychology (1): An exploration of psychology's persistent problems, its emergence from its roots in philosophy and physiology, and its major systems.

CLIN_PSY 412 Cognitive Psychology (1): Classical and contemporary research in perception, cognition, and memory from an information-processing perspective.

CLIN_PSY 413 Advanced Social Psychology (1): Interpersonal communication with reference to the genesis of self, society, knowledge, and mental illness from a symbolic interactionism perspective. Traditional approaches to social psychology are also reviewed.

CLIN_PSY 414 Diversity in Psychological Science and Practice (1): An examination of ethnicity, gender, age, and other social and cultural differences on psychopathology, psychotherapy, assessment and psychological research.

CLIN_PSY 415 Professional Issues in Psychology (0): Introduction to clinical psychology, emphasizing the development of psychotherapies and mental testing and considering various current issues such as ethics, licensing and certification, interprofessional relations, and the scientist-practitioner model of graduate training.

CLIN_PSY 416 Psychopathology (1): Review of common psychiatric disorders, including phenomenological, empirical and various theoretical perspectives.

CLIN_PSY 418 Cognitive Models of Psychopathology and Psychotherapy (1): Assumptions of cognitive models and empirical evidence supporting cognitive conceptualizations of behavioral and emotional disorders are reviewed.

CLIN_PSY 420 Theories of Personality (1): Theories of personality and their empirical foundations; contemporary research on individual differences; and methods for the study of personality.

CLIN_PSY 421 Research in Psychotherapy (1): Current status of psychotherapy research and of various approaches to the study of outcome and process.

CLIN_PSY 426 Research Methods I (1): Introduction to statistical inference, focusing on single-variable research applications in clinical psychology. Topics include exploratory data analysis, probability, and basic statistical tests such as t-test, F-test, chi-square, and nonparametrics.

CLIN_PSY 427 Research Methods II (1): Research design in clinical research. Analysis of variance and multivariate statistical models. Fundamentals of data analysis by computer, using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS).

CLIN_PSY 428 Research Methods III (1): Measurement issues. Instrument construction, reliability, validity, and related research strategies. Examples from ongoing research.

CLIN_PSY 429 Advanced Research Methodology (1): An examination of validity, measurement, experimental design, sampling, data management and meta-analysis. Students design their own research proposals.

CLIN_PSY 432 Family and Marital Therapy (1): History and current practice of family and marital therapy; literature in the field, videotapes, demonstrations, and discussion.

CLIN_PSY 441 Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (1): Central issues of psychodynamically oriented treatment, including the impact of theories of development on psychotherapy practice, therapeutic action, neutrality, transference, and countertransference.

CLIN_PSY 444 Cognitive-Behavior Therapies (1): Methods, practice and research relevant to cognitive-behavioral treatment. Topics include assessment, case formulation, and cognitive and behavioral techniques.

CLIN_PSY 446 Countertransference: Theory and Clinical Applications (1): The central role of the therapist's countertransference experience in the therapeutic action of psychotherapy, examined through the historical development of theories of countertransference, protective identification, and empathy. Clinical vignettes illuminate these concepts and illustrate integration of theory and technique.

CLIN_PSY 462 Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy (1): a critical examination of empiricially supported psychological treatments for children and adolescents with behavior disorders.

CLIN_PSY 466 Child Psychopathology (1): Psychopathologies of childhood, emphasizing behavior and emotional disorders, conduct disorders, the psychoses of childhood, children's physical handicaps, chronic health disorders, mental retardation, learning disabilities and hyperactivity, transient situational disorders, and special symptom disorders.

CLIN_PSY 472 Brain and Behavior: Introduction to Neuropsychology (1): Biological basis of behavior. Topics include basic neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, neuropathology, functional organization of perceptual and motor processes, motivational and emotional behavior, and memory and learning.

CLIN_PSY 475 Neuropsychological Diagnosis (1): Major neurological diseases and different types of brain injuries, and the kind of intellectual impairment that may result from brain damage. Use of psychological tests in the measurement of cognitive deficits, emphasizing the Halstead Reitan Battery, but including many other instruments. Prerequisites: CLIN_PSY 472 or equivalent.

CLIN_PSY 476 Health Psychology (1): Psychological aspects of physical disease. Psychological precursors and sequelae of illnesses and disabilities. Environmental and social stresses related to illness, rehabilitation psychology, and the psychological aspects of the delivery of health care.

CLIN_PSY 484 Existential Psychotherapy (1): Psychodynamic underpinnings of the human condition (for example, death, ethics, character formation, love, regret); also explores global values and assumptions that psychoanalysis makes about human existence.

CLIN_PSY 487 Life-Span Developmental Psychology (1): Cognitive and socioemotional development from an organismic, life-span perspective. Piaget, Erikson, Kohlberg, Gutmann, and Neugarten.

CLIN_PSY 490 Neuroanatomy (1): This course is an in-depth overview of basic CNS neuroanatomy. It covers neuroanatomical organization and pathways throughout the brain and spinal cord, including both sensory and higher-order cognitive systems. Areas and pathways will be covered from both a structural and a functional perspective.

CLIN_PSY 498 Special Topics in Clinical Psychology (1): New course possibilities not yet offered regularly and seminar offerings by visiting faculty in their areas of special interest and expertise.

CLIN_PSY 499 Independent Study (1-3) : Permission of instructor and department required. May be repeated for credit.
