Curriculum
HQS 401 Introduction to Healthcare Quality (1): Concepts include definition of quality, trends in quality, characteristics of high quality healthcare delivery system, assessing/measuring quality, consumer interests, public policy perspectives, data issues, incentives for quality, measuring quality of life.

HQS 402 Introduction to Patient Safety (1): Introductory and intermediate patient safety theory and methods will be covered, including high reliability systems; human factors and latent conditions; medication safety; medical communication and hand-offs; health information technologies; human factors engineering; and risk assessment methods.

HQS 430 Capstone I (1): Each student will develop a focused project in healthcare quality or patient safety. Design and methods will be taught. Students will prepare a literature review, and present their thesis/projects in class. Selected lectures will focus on topics relevant to student projects.

HQS 435 Capstone II (1): An integrative course requiring students to work on a project that demonstrates understanding of earlier coursework, and their ability to apply concepts to a significant problem in quality of care or patient safety. Instructor will work closely with each student/group of students.

HQS 440 Fundamental Methods for Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety (1): Concepts include: epidemiologic definitions and concepts, as applied to healthcare setting. Topics include: association with causation; diseases in populations and healthcare settings; epidemiologic study designs for research and program evaluation; measuring processes and outcomes; measuring value.

HQS 460 Ethical Issues in Health Services Research (1): This course will provide an overview of core ethical research concepts relevant to researchers or individuals interested in conducting health services research.

HQS 499 Independent Study in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety (1): Students will select a topic in healthcare quality or patient safety to research or will develop and implement a healthcare quality or patient safety improvement intervention. The student must have a mentor willing to supervise their learning and project for this independent study. Students must have topics and mentors approved prior to beginning the course. Prerequisites: HQS 401 and HQS 402.

HQS 501 Advanced Topics in Healthcare Quality (1): This course advances the student’s knowledge of quality improvement theory and methods through two weeks of full-day sessions, accompanied by daily readings and group/individual assignments. Reading of materials and preparation of written assignments are required prior to the start. Final paper.

HQS 502 Advanced Patient Safety (1): Advanced patient safety theory and methods will be taught through 2 weeks of full-day sessions, accompanied by readings, group assignments, and individual assignments. Reading of materials and preparation of written assignments are required prior to the start, and a final paper is due after last class.
