PhD Degree Requirements

The following requirements are in addition to, or further elaborate upon, those requirements outlined in the Current Students section of this Web site

Coursework Requirements

Two years (six quarters) of full-time coursework beyond MA degree is required. All doctoral students are required to take MTS 501 and MTS 502-1 or MTS 502-2 (see MA requirements), and to develop expertise in at least two concentrations by taking three or more courses in each area. Students are also required to develop methodological expertise appropriate to their concentrations as specified by their committee.  In addition, specific types of courses are required by the fields of concentration, as outlined below:

Screen Cultures students are expected to develop expertise in history, cultural theory, and visual analysis by taking recommended graduate courses in Radio/TV /Film as well as undergraduate Radio/TV/Film courses where appropriate. Students are also encouraged take courses with participating affiliate faculty in Art History, Art Theory and Practice, Comp Lit, the Music School, German, French and Italian, Spanish, English, African American Studies, Sociology, and other departments in the School of Communication. Students with a concentration in Media Industries or Technology and Social Behavior are expected to develop expertise in research methods by taking a minimum of two courses in analytical procedures. Below are research courses which have proven useful. Sequences and special topics courses in other departments may also be appropriate, but should be authorized by the student’s chair.

  • Examinations: upon completion of coursework, written and oral comprehensive examination
  • Research/Projects: present a research paper or grant proposal by the end of the second year of coursework
  • PhD Dissertation: based on original, independent research
  • Final Evaluations: oral defense of dissertation
