Courses and Requirements

A student completes the cluster training by taking three courses by the end of their second year according to the following scheme:

  • The core course in Classical Traditions Research that is offered each year taken in the first year.  This course examines a classical source (a work of literature, philosophy, a historical event, an art object, an institution, etc.) and set of exemplary moments of later engagement with it.  The class  draws out ways in which the classical source and the context under discussion stand in a relationship of reciprocal provocation, with a view toward appreciating how understanding of the classical source can illuminate the later context and how the later context can illuminate the classical source.
  • Two additional courses from an approved list that so that at least 2 of 3 designated areas (Philosophy, Literature, Culture) are taken.  The area distribution is to ensure a measure of breadth of exposure.

Language requirements

Students complete language training according to the requirements of the main disciplinary home department. However, the Cluster offers activities designed to facilitate Greek and/or Latin training. For example, students may:

  • attend Greek and Latin classes offered in the Classics Department
  • obtain tutoring in consultation with the directors of language instruction in the Classics Department
  • receive application assistance and follow-up support if enrolling in an intensive summer language study program  (e.g., the Summer Language Institute at the University of Chicago, which is free to Northwestern students through the CIC traveling scholars program)
  • attend on-going Greek and Latin reading groups  (non-credit).
