COUN_PSY 406 Research Methods in Counseling Psychology (1): The course is primarily oriented towards students who will eventually be consumers of published research. Some additional materials and discussions may be supplied for those who plan to continue in a doctoral program. The class will treat common approaches to this larger body of research, emphasizing the strengths and limitations of the methods used. We will start with sampling decisions, hypothesis development, and measurement. We will conclude with some simple models of analysis.
COUN_PSY 411 Individuals and Systems: Psychodynamic Viewpoints (1): Psychodynamic theories of personality and social systems. Application to analysis of interpersonal and helping relationships; personality development and dynamics; psychopathology, assessment, and intervention in relation to individuals and organizations.
COUN_PSY 412 Group and Organizational Dynamics (1): Social psychology of groups and social systems focusing on group dynamics and intergroup relations. Application to decision-making groups, educational groups, and human-service delivery groups and systems. Participation in a weekend group relations conference. Prerequisites: COUN_PSY 411.
COUN_PSY 413 Group Therapy (1): Research, theory, and practice of group therapy from a psychoanalytic/social systems viewpoint. Prerequisites: COUN_PSY 412.
COUN_PSY 414 Psychology of Adult Development: Theory and Research (1): Social-psychological conceptions of age-stage theories, the role of transition crises, aging of America, and sex differences. Implications for assessment and preventive and/or supportive intervention strategies. Either COUN_PSY 414 or COUN_PSY 434 must be taken for credit, depending on student's interests and career goals.
COUN_PSY 415 Psychopathology through the Adult Life Course (1): Adaptive, pathological, individual, and family functioning through the life course. Developmental vulnerabilities, transitions, and tasks from a psychodynamic perspective. Clinical, developmental, and family systems research; onset and dynamics of common neurotic and psychotic disorders. Prerequisites: COUN_PSY 411.
COUN_PSY 416 Theories of Counseling and Psychotherapy (1): In-depth examination of the basic theoretical frameworks that inform the practice of counseling and psychotherapy.
COUN_PSY 417 Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with Adults and Children (1): Application of cognitive behavioral approach with a broad range of populations. An integrated approach is emphasized.
COUN_PSY 418 Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and Counseling (1): Basic psychological concepts and theories useful in understanding individual and couple processes and therapies from a psychodynamic/systems point of view. Psycho-dynamically oriented individual, couples, and group psychotherapy. Prerequisites: COUN_PSY 411 and COUN_PSY 415.
COUN_PSY 419 Psychology of Work and Career (1): Training and employment transitions for youth and adults. Improving design and delivery of service, career, and labor market information; placement at the local-community and individual-client levels.
COUN_PSY 421 Adult Development and Work Careers (1): Psychological conceptions of adult development and the social environment. Influence of families, schools, and work institutions on adult development.
COUN_PSY 422 Marital and Family Therapy (1): Theoretical foundations of family therapy. Systematic examination of major schools of family treatment.
COUN_PSY 426 Assessment of Individual Differences in Personality and Intelligence (1): Individually administered intelligence and projective tests in the assessment of individual differences. Rationale, characteristics, administration, and interpretation of these tests.
COUN_PSY 427 Career Psychology (1): Theories of career choice, career commitment, and life-course development applied to research and practice in career counseling.
COUN_PSY 430 Vocational Assessment (1): Major measures of career development, vocational interests, and occupational aptitudes. Principles and practice in developing vocational appraisals.
COUN_PSY 433 Understanding and Treating Adolescents (1): Theories, tasks, and domains of adolescent development are applied to issues of adolescent psychopathology, assessment, treatment, and other interventions. A developmental psychopathology model is presented.
COUN_PSY 434 Psychosocial Development in Children and Adolescents: Implications for Counseling (1): Issues in developmental psychology from infancy to adolescence; attachment, separation/individuation, sense of self and continuity; implications for counseling children and their families.
COUN_PSY 435 Child Psychological Assessment (1): Survey of strategies, techniques, and instruments for child (ages 5-13) assessment in professional counseling settings; emphasis on integrating various modalities of assessment and report writing.
COUN_PSY 436 Child Psychotherapy (1): Examination of central issues in child psychotherapy and the mainstream treatment approaches including psychoanalytic, play, cognitive-behavioral and behavioral therapy. Emphasis on high-frequency problems for which children enter therapy.
COUN_PSY 451 Topics in Counseling Psychology (1): Theoretical and applied areas of counseling psychology, life-course development, and intervention. Topics include biological bases of behavior, human neuropsychology, psychopharmacology, advanced psychopathology, career development and assessment, and rehabilitation counseling.
COUN_PSY 452 Theory and Technique of Substance Abuse Counseling (1): Introduction to substance abuse and addiction; effects of addictions on relationships ,jobs, and community; current treatment options and the counselor’s role in recovery.
COUN_PSY 453 Evaluation and Treatment of Trauma Disorders (1): Covers: (a) the nature of posttraumatic conditions, (b) the psychobiology underlying stress, trauma and dissociation, and (c) the treatment of posttraumatic conditions.
COUN_PSY 463 Topics in Research Methods, Evaluation, and Assessment (1): Topics in quantitative, qualitative, and assessment methods vary. Literature search and meta-analysis using computer technology and summative techniques from hypothesis formulation through data analysis to report writing. May be repeated for credit with change of topic.
COUN_PSY 479-1,2,3 Introduction to Clinical Practice (1)(1)(1): Three-quarter in-depth orientation to the counseling profession for "Two Plus" students entering the counseling field for the first time following a career in another discipline.
COUN_PSY 480-1 Counseling Methods I: Interviewing and Assessment (1): Interviewing and assessment skills; in conjunction with COUN_PSY 481. For master's students in Counseling Psychology.
COUN_PSY 480-2 Counseling Methods II: Assessment and Intervention (1): Assessment and intervention skills; in conjunction with COUN_PSY 481. For master's students in Counseling Psychology.
COUN_PSY 480-3 Counseling Methods III: Special Issues (1): Special clinical issues and controversies; in conjunction with COUN_PSY 481. For master's students in Counseling Psychology.
COUN_PSY 481-0,1,2,3 Supervised Practicum in counseling Psychology (1)(1)(1)(1): Three quarters of supervised field training, clinical supervision and case consultation of approximately 16-20 hours per week, with optional fourth quarter; in conjunction with COUN_PSY 480-1, 2, 3. COUN_PSY 482-1,2,3,4 Supervised Externship in Counseling Psychology (0-1)(0-1)(0-1)(0-1): Three quarters supervised field experience of approximately 24 hours per week with optional fourth quarter. COUN_PSY 483-1 Professional Ethics (1): The purpose of this course is to give students more depth in their understanding and decision-making regarding major ethical and legal issues in the practice of professional counseling.
COUN_PSY 483-2 Cultural Diversity (1): This course/seminar will introduce the student to the process of providing counseling from a multi-cultural perspective.
COUN_PSY 483-3 Professional Issues in Counseling Psychology (1): Discussion of clinical issues in seminar format; in conjunction with COUN_PSY 482-3. Prerequisites: COUN_PSY 481-1,2,3.
COUN_PSY 484-1,2,3 Individual Diagnosis and Assessment (1)(1)(1): Standardized psychometric tests of personality, intelligence, and vocational interest; individual measures of intelligence and personality, including projectives.
COUN_PSY 485-1,2,3 Research Seminar on the Social Psychology of Organizations (1)(1)(1): Reports from graduate students and faculty on projects in planning or implementing phases. Projects may be empirical (quantitative and qualitative), theoretical, or policy oriented.
COUN_PSY 486-1,2,3,4 Practicum in Individual Diagnosis and Assessment (0-1)(0-1)(0-1)(0-1): Supervised field experience in administering, scoring, and interpreting psychometry tests of personality and intelligence. Arranged with program training director.

(Only for those students who have no other registration except the externship and need full-time status for deferment of loans.)
COUN_PSY 584 Advanced Externship in Counseling Psychology (0): Advanced-level pre-internship supervised field experience in an approved clinical setting. Arranged with program training director. Prerequisites: COUN_PSY 482 or COUN_PSY 582.
