The joint doctoral program in Physical Therapy & Engineering (DPT/PhD) gives students a unique opportunity to receive training both as PhD level engineers as well as licensed physical therapy doctors (DPT). Focusing on movement and rehabilitation sciences, this joint program gives exposure to the pathophysiology of movement disorders and how the resulting impairments and handicaps impact the design of therapeutic devices, rehabilitation strategies, and patients' quality of life. This program will prepare graduates for academic, research, and industry, and high level clinical positions.

DPT/PhD students at Northwestern meet DPT requirements for the Feinberg School of Medicine, and Ph.D. requirements for the Graduate School, in less time than if the degrees were pursued separately. The Graduate School will award DPT/PhD students up to six quarters of residency credit for the first two years of the DPT. This enables these students to satisfy the MS requirements for the engineering PhD, complete all remaining advanced graduate school courses, and defend their PhD proposal for admission to candidacy by the end of the second year in graduate school.
