Certificate Requirements

The following requirements are in addition to, or further elaborate upon, those requirements outlined in the Student Services section of this Web site.

Coursework Requirements

Ph.D students in participating departments can obtain a specialization in Language, Music, and Communication by taking two courses from each of three areas: [1] Instrumentation and Algorithms [2] Biological mechanisms [3] Architectures of Language and Music, or a total of six courses.

Communication Sciences and Disorders 301: Anatomy and Physiology of the Vocal Mechanism

Communication Sciences and Disorders 302: Anatomy and Physiology of the Peripheral Hearing Mechanism

Communication Sciences and Disorders 310/410:  Biological Foundations of Speech and Music

Communication Sciences and Disorders 507: Neural Mechanisms of Language Processing

Communication Sciences and Disorders 306: Psychoacoustics

Linguistics 350: Fundamentals of Laboratory Phonology

Linguistics 360: Fundamentals of Syntax

Music Theory 351: Music Cognition

 

Three of the selected courses must be outside of the student's home department. In each category, the student is free to substitute a more advanced course for one requiring a listed course as a prerequisite. Additional substitutions may be authorized by the LMC Director of Graduate Studies.
