Ph.D students in participating departments can obtain a specialization in Language, Music, and Communication by taking two courses from each of three areas: [1] Instrumentation and Algorithms [2] Biological mechanisms [3] Architectures of Language and Music, or a total of six courses.

Three of the selected courses must be outside of the student's home department. In each category, the student is free to substitute a more advanced course for one requiring a listed course as a prerequisite. Additional substitutions may be authorized by the LMC Director of Graduate Studies.
