LING 310 Psycholinguistics (1): Introduction to experimental and developmental psycholinguistics. Mental processes underlying the comprehension, production, and acquisition of language. Structure of the human lexicon and parser. Innateness versus learning in acquisition.

LING 320 Sociolinguistics (1): Linguistic variation, social differences, class dialects, styles, and diglossia. Linguistic diversity; multidialectal and multilingual societies. Correlations between linguistic structures and nonlinguistic aspects of cultures. Sociolinguistic data as a diagnostic index of social structure, language planning, educational policies, and modernization. Prerequisites: Permission of instructor.

MUSICOL 323 Fieldwork in Ethnomusicology (1): Introduction to the field of ethnomusicology, its history, bibliographical resources, methods, and theories.

MUSICOL 327 Music of Africa (1): Introduces students to the diverse musics of Africa through the multidisciplinary lens of ethnomusicology. Topics include music learning and transmission, aesthetics, musical styles and structures, performance practice, compositional process, musical change, and the role of music in society.

MUSICOL 337 Improvisation and World Musicianship (1): Improvisation in music systems such as Western art music, jazz, Indian music, and African music. Performance workshops in improvisation and performance skills in music of different cultures (for example, African drumming, Indian solfeggio, and rhythmic mnemonics).

MUSICOL 338 African Mbira Music (1): An ethnomusicological study of the mbira. Mbira construction, development of basic playing skills, and performance of associated vocal and dance styles.

MUSICOL 423 Seminar in Ethnomusicology (1): Selected topics; application of ethnomusicological techniques to research projects. Prerequisites: MUSICOL 323.

PERF_ST 316 Folklore and Oral Traditions (1): Genres of oral literature. Introduction to methods and aims of folklore research. Emphasizes two themes in modern folkloristics: the nature of verbal art as performance and the importance of cultural context.
