MS Degree Requirements

The following requirements are in addition to, or further elaborate upon, those requirements outlined in the Student Services section of this Web site.

Coursework Requirements

Courses for Credit

  • 3 laboratory rotations BIOL SCI 499 during the first three quarters of Year 1. 1 unit each, 3 units total
  • 6 IBiS or comparable elective courses by the end of Spring Quarter of Year 1, at least 3 of which need to be IBiS dedicated courses (BIOL SCI 401, 402, 403, 404, 405, 406, 407, 408 and 409).  1 unit each, 6 units total 
  • 1 Special Topics courses BIOL SCI 455-0; 1 quarter for an MS. 1 unit each, 1 unit total
  • 4 quarters of Independent Study BIOL SCI 590 in thesis lab begins in summer quarter of Year 1. 3 units, 12 units total

Total units: 22

 

Non Credit Required Courses

·      6 quarters of Seminar series BIOL SCI 462-0 in Years 1 and 2.  0 units

·      1 Bioethics course BIOL SCI 423 or BIOL SCI 495 in Year 2. 0 units

 

Other MS Degree Requirements

 

  • Research/Projects: 20- to 30-page written research proposal, submitted at the end of the spring quarter of Year 2, based on the results from student's independent research
  • Final Evaluations: oral defense of written research proposal before a committee consisting of the research advisor and three additional IBiS faculty members
  • Other: A grade of B or better in all independent study/lab rotations and an overall grade average of B or better in all coursework
