July 7, 2009 Headlines:

Upcoming Events for Graduate Students:

Registration for Summer Social Remains Open Until Thursday, July 9 at Noon
The quarterly "TGS-GSA Night Out" event will be a picnic held at the Lakefill.

We invite you to gather with students outside the lab and library and have a drink and a bite to eat with colleagues from across campus.  TGS and GSA will be providing refreshments; there is no charge for admission.  Only those with nametags will be served at the picnic.  The details:

  • Date: Tuesday, July 14, 2009
  • Time:  5:00pm - 7:00pm
  • Location:  The Lakefill, near the Norris University Center (Evanston Campus)

Registration is open at http://survey.gsad.northwestern.edu/night_out_july09/ through Thursday, July 9 at noon. This extended registration will ensure that most students interested in the event are part of the pool from which students will be randomly selected.  From the respondents, we will choose a cross section of humanities, social science, and STEM students, and send confirmation letters to up to 1000 in a separate memo by the afternoon of July 9.

Building a graduate student community is one of our goals at The Graduate School, and we believe that providing this kind of event is in line with this goal.  Students that do not make the event this time may have the opportunity to join the fun next quarter.

Registration Deadline for Fall Quarter 2009 U-Pass
Attention Current Full-Time Enrolled Students!

To take full advantage of the activity fee, including being able to use the Fall U-Pass starting on September 15, 2009, students must register for Fall 2009 by 7/29/09.  Students who register later than 7/29/09 will receive their U-Pass in a later distribution.  More information will be provided regarding the U-Pass distribution closer to September.  The deadline to register and not have FICA taken out is still September 19th.

Discounted Wildcat Football and Basketball Tickets for Graduate Students
The Wildcats make it easier for graduate and part-time students to purchase discounted football and basketball tickets.

Wildcat Football games are the perfect way to make new friends, strengthen existing friendships and reunite with old friends.  Create a fun tradition for your family and friends that will keep you connected throughout the years by being part of the pageantry of Big Ten college football.

Season tickets and single-game tickets are available at a deeply-discounted rate for graduate and part-time students and their spouses.  Ordering tickets is easier than ever before with season tickets beginning at $114, which is half-off the regular season ticket price.  Nonconference game tickets (Towson, Eastern Michigan and Miami Ohio) are $20 each and conference game tickets (Penn State, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Indiana) are $30.

Please see the Northwestern University Athletics Web site or call the Wildcat Ticket Office at 847.491.CATS for ticket information or to order tickets.  For more information about tailgating on campus, join our “North Beach Parking Lot Tailgaters” Facebook group to keep up with the special events that will be planned for every Big Ten game.
If you have questions or need help planning your pregame festivities, please contact Tracie Hitz at

Volunteer to Welcome International Ph.D. Students to Northwestern in July and August
The
International Summer Institute
(ISI) is a program of The Graduate School which helps new international PhD students adjust to life at Northwestern.
ISI needs both American and international graduate student volunteers to help new students feel welcome.  Volunteers help with orientation activities, mingle with students at social events, discuss student life in panel sessions, and more.  You may choose to sign up for just an hour or two, or help throughout the entire program.  To volunteer or ask for more information, please contact Assistant Director Meredith Larson at

Increased Services, Increased Fee for all Full-Time Graduate Students
The CTA is increasing the cost of the U-PASS by 15% beginning Fall Quarter 2009.

As a result of this price increase being imposed by the CTA and on recommendation of the
Graduate Leadership Council to expand U-Pass coverage from 323 days per year to a full 365 days per year, the quarterly cost of the activity fee will increase to $78 for all full-time eligible graduate students beginning September 2009.  To be clear, $74 will fund the U-PASS and the remaining $4 will continue to contribute to the expenses for an attorney and community building activities for all graduate students.
The start of the 365 days will begin on September 16, 2009.  There will still be a break in service from September 1 -15, 2009.
For more information about billing and payment of this fee, please see the Activity Fee Web site
.
