June 2 , 2009 Headlines:

Upcoming Events for Graduate Students:

Registration for Summer Social Opens Today
It's time for the quarterly "TGS Night Out". This quarter's event will be a picnic held at the Lakefill, co-hosted by TGS and a graduate student group to be announced later.
We invite you to gather with students outside the lab and library and have a drink and a bite to eat with colleagues from across campus. We'll be providing refreshments. There is no charge for admission or for refreshments. The details:

  • Date: Tuesday, July 14, 2009
  • Time:  5:00pm - 7:00pm
  • Location:  The Lakefill, near the Norris University Center (Evanston Campus)

Registration is open at http://survey.gsad.northwestern.edu/night_out_july09/ today through June 12. This extended registration will ensure that most students interested in the event are part of the pool from which students will be randomly selected. From the respondents, we will choose a cross section of humanities, social science, and STEM students on June 15, and send confirmation letters to up to 1000 in a separate memo. Building a graduate student community is one of our goals at The Graduate School, and we believe that providing this kind of event is in line with this goal. Students that do not make the event this time may have the opportunity to join the fun next quarter.

FICA and Summer 2009 Registration Deadline Approaches
Graduate students who are scheduled to receive a check for 06/30/2009 must register by 5 PM on June 19, 2009 in order to avoid having Social Security/Medicare tax (FICA) deducted.
Only students being funded entirely or partially as graduate, teaching and/or research assistants are subject to FICA being deducted if they are not registered. Registration for Summer 2009 began on Monday, April 13, 2009.

If registration occurs after 5 PM on June 20th and FICA tax is deducted, students should print a copy of the confirmed registration from CAESAR. This registration receipt must be brought to the Payroll Office where a refund of the FICA tax will be processed within 60 days of receipt.

If a copy of your confirmed registration cannot be obtained through CAESAR, the Office of the Registrar should be contacted for assistance.

If there are questions concerning registration, please contact the appropriate TGS Student Services representative. If there are any other questions, please contact the Payroll Office at 847/491-7362.

NU Health Plan Options Detailed for Students Leaving the University
This message is for students who are enrolled in the Northwestern Health Plan and are graduating, or leaving the University at the end of spring quarter 2009.
If you wish to cancel your enrollment in the NU health plan, you must submit your request in writing to the
Health Insurance Office at 633 Emerson Street by Friday, June 5, 2009. You may also fax your request to 847/491-4268. Once the request has been approved, your charges will be adjusted. Your health insurance may be adjusted following a review of your account.

You do have the option of staying enrolled in the NU health plan through August 31, 2009. If you wish to continue your enrollment in the NU Plan after you leave the University and you requested monthly payroll deductions from your stipend to pay your health insurance cost you will need to make other arrangements with the Office of Student Accounts to settle your obligation since you will no longer be receiving pay through Northwestern.

If you have further questions about this matter please contact the Health Insurance Office at 847/491-4134 or contact Ethlyn Pitts-Senecal.

Graduating? Keep Using Your Northwestern @u Account
Did you know that you can keep using your @u.northwestern.edu account—and all of your mail, contacts, and documents—after you graduate?
Instead of logging in with your NetID and NetID password, though, you’ll need to log in with your official @u Account Username and Account Password because your NetID will eventually expire.

  • Find your @u Account Username
Your official @u username is located in bold, black text at the top-right corner of your @u.northwestern.edu e-mail page--near Settings, Help, and Sign out. Example: JosephWildcat2009 – Your username does not include “@u.northwestern.edu”.
  • Find your @u Account Password
If you need to reset a forgotten @u password before NetID expiration, visit
    @u.northwestern.edu Account Management.

Read more about post-graduation e-mail use and contact the NUIT Support Center with any questions.

NOTE: If you’re not graduating or leaving the University and your NetID remains active, access to your @u account will be unaffected.

Increased Services, Increased Fee for all Full-Time Graduate Students
The CTA is increasing the cost of the U-PASS by 15% beginning Fall Quarter 2009.
As a result of this price increase being imposed by the CTA and on recommendation of the
Graduate Leadership Council to expand U-Pass coverage from 323 days per year to a full 365 days per year, the quarterly cost of the activity fee will increase to $78 for all full-time eligible graduate students beginning September 2009. To be clear, $74 will fund the U-PASS and the remaining $4 will continue to contribute to the expenses for an attorney and community building activities for all graduate students.

The start of the 365 days will begin on September 16, 2009. There will still be a break in service from September 1 -15, 2009.

For more information about billing and payment of this fee, please see the Activity Fee Web site

.

Students enrolled in TGS 512 (Continuous Registration), 513, 514, 510 (Co-op internship) and those with other less-than-full-time registrations will not be charged the activity fee and are NOT eligible for the attendant services.

Please direct all questions regarding the activity fee and any of the services provided to tgs-u-pass@northwestern.edu.

Take It or Leave It!
During move-out, a lot of additional trash is generated.
From June 5 – 15,
NU Recycling will conduct the annual clothing and food drive in all residence halls. Boxes for the "Take it or Leave It" program will be placed in residence lobbies or lounges (including Engelhart & McManus) as well as the Sports Aquatics entryway: one for clothing/linens and one for nonperishable food. Boxes will be emptied throughout the program and items will be donated to local charities. Please donate the items you don’t want and recycle all you can! Also, from June 8 – 12, old computers, monitors, printers, accessories & TVs will be collected for recycling at Engelhart & McManus. Look for designated boxes. These items can be recycled year-round via drop off in the WildCard Office at Norris.

Volunteer to welcome international Ph.D. students to Northwestern in July and August
The
International Summer Institute (ISI) is a program of The Graduate School which helps new international PhD students adjust to life at Northwestern.
ISI needs both American and international graduate student volunteers to help new students feel welcome. Volunteers help with orientation activities, mingle with students at social events, discuss student life in panel sessions, and more. You may choose to sign up for just an hour or two, or help throughout the entire program.  To volunteer or ask for more information, please contact Assistant Director Meredith Larson at
