“Academic Speed Dating: A Mix and Mingle”
Save the date for The Center on the Science of Diversity’s first Graduate Student Research Community event on January 22, 2009: “Academic Speed Dating: A Mix and Mingle”.
The
Center on the Science of Diversity (CSD) would like to invite you to join our Graduate Student Research Community. The mission of CSD is to promote social scientific, managerial and educational research and dialogue about the social impact of diversity. CSD's interdisciplinary academic team is composed of scholars from across Northwestern University, with representation from the Kellogg School of Management, the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Education and Social Policy, and the School of Communication.

The goal of the Graduate Student Research Community is to bring together scholars who share a common interest in the challenges and opportunities associated with social diversity of all kinds. Diversity is becoming an increasingly commonplace reality of social life, as people of differing races, ethnicities, nationalities, genders, socioeconomic status, ideologies, religions, thought worlds and cultures find themselves in interdependent relationships with one another. We see diversity as a broad concept with implications and consequences in many domains. We encourage you to join us if your research interests align with the goals and mission of the center.

To join the CSD Graduate Student Research Community, please join our Facebook group. More details about the event on January 22, 2009 will follow at the start of the new year. For more information about the CSD please visit our Web site.

Getting a Feeling for Shakespeare’s Theater: Faculty and Graduate Reading Group
Beginning this Winter Quarter, a group of interested graduate students and faculty will convene at noon each Wednesday for informal academic conversations over lunch. We will discuss texts in preparation for a conference hosted at Northwestern in spring 2009.
On Friday and Saturday, May 1-2, 2009, Northwestern University will host “Phenomenal Performances: Getting a Feeling for Shakespeare’s Theater,” a colloquium on the experiences, practices, attitudes, and beliefs that marked the practices and reception of playing, playwriting, and playgoing in early modern England. Some of the most interesting and prominent scholars working on the feelings, habits, and experiences of Elizabethan and Jacobean theater culture will be presenting new work and exploring a variety of new methods and questions about the playing of the period.

To set the stage for this event, Will West (English and CLS) is organizing a reading group for interested graduate students and faculty during the Winter Quarter 2009. Each Wednesday during the quarter the reading group will meet from noon to 1:30 to discuss an article written by one of the scholars who will take part in the conference in the spring. We will provide pizza and beverages.

If you are interested, please contact Will West (w-west@northwestern.edu) or Nat Small (n-small@northwestern.edu); we will be compiling a list of names until through the end of the quarter.

“Phenomenal Performances: Getting a Feeling for Shakespeare’s Theater” is sponsored by the WCAS Dean’s Office, the Department of English, The Graduate School, and the Alice Kaplan Institute for the Humanities.
