TGS Graduation Deadlines Approach
Students planning to receive a degree in June 2008 should login to CAESAR to submit an Application for Degree form today, April 4.
Doctoral students planning to graduate in June 2008 should consult the Checklist for Doctoral Degree Completion [PDF] to confirm that all filing requirements have been met. Students who plan to receive a Master's degree should login to CAESAR to submit a Master's Degree Completion form by May 16.
If you are a graduating PhD or MFA student (or December 2007 graduate) in WCAS, Kellogg, The School of Communication, or a TGS Interdisciplinary Program, you are invited to participate in The Graduate School Hooding Ceremony on Friday, June 20. Students who would like to participate should submit the Intent to Participate form by May 9 . Those who would like to purchase regalia must fill out an order form no later than April 18 . The deadline for renting regalia is May 1.
If you are a graduating doctoral or MFA student in the School of Music, School of Education and Social Policy, or McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, follow the directions for you as listed on this Web site.

Call Made for 2008 TGS Hooding Ceremony Volunteers
Planning for The Graduate School 2008 Hooding Ceremony is underway.
Current graduate students not being hooded this year are encouraged to volunteer at the 2008 Hooding Ceremony, on June 20 at Noon. Volunteers attend one planning meeting and assist with the ceremony from 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM. Volunteers may attend the hooding ceremony without a ticket as well as the lunch reception that follows. Interested volunteers should contact Kate Veraldi, Coordinator of Student Services at The Graduate School.
Earth Day Celebrations at Northwestern Focus on Reduction of Waste
On Earth Day, April 22, NU will be constructing “Mt. Trashmore,” a mountain of trash representing the refuse generated on campus.
Come see how much waste Northwestern generates and learn what you can do to help shrink the mountain. The event will take place to the west of Lunt Hall from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22nd. Check the NU Recycling Web site in the coming weeks for more information. This event is a combined effort of NU Recycling, Facilities Management, Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW), Students for Ecological and Environmental Development (SEED), Environmental Campus Outreach at Hillel (ECO) and the NU Sustainability Working Group. The event is weather permitting.
Free Test of Spoken English Preparation Workshops Offered to Graduate Students
Five free weekly sessions are offered beginning Thursday, April 10, from 6:30pm to 9:00pm
The Graduate Student ESL program offers free test preparation workshops to graduate students for oral English exams such as the SPEAK/TOEFL-IBT during the fall and spring quarters. Learn effective language skills and strategies for test-taking, take a practice test in a real test-taking environment, and get immediate feedback from trained instructors. Students must register in advance in order to participate by contacting Assistant Director Elisa Sneed German. Students are expected to attend all 5 sessions.
Conference Travel Grants Available for PhD and MFA Students
Conference Travel Grants provide funds to assist PhD and MFA students traveling to conferences or seminars to make presentations on behalf of the University.
Students are eligible to receive one Conference Travel Grant per academic year. The final deadline for receipt of all 2007/08 Conference Travel Grant applications is Friday, June 13, 2008. Students should apply two months prior to the conference whenever possible. For more information, go to the Conference Travel Grant Web site.
CTA Begins Southbound Phase of Three-Track Project
Beginning on March 30th, Phase 2 of three-track construction work began

2008-2009 Community Building Proposals Due May 15
Help develop programming that brings together groups of students who would ordinarily not come into contact with each other!
TGS' Community Building groups and programming continue to help stem the isolation that graduate students often experience in their laboratories and libraries. Details on the how to apply - and guidelines for programming - can be found on TGS' Community Building Web site.
Proposal-Writing Workshops Continue
The Office of Fellowships offers proposal-writing workshops for all graduate departments.
Interested students should contact Stephen Hill to arrange a workshop in the Spring Quarter. In the workshop students learn what funding agencies seek in fellowship proposals, how to identify sources of funding, the elements that make up a complete proposal, and how to turn an interesting topic into a researchable question. International Student and Scholar Income Tax Information Sessions

Theatre: Crossroads of the Humanities
Dates: April 10 – 12, 2008

This is the second conference in a series addressing methodological challenges of interdisciplinary theatre scholarship, hosted by Northwestern's Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Theatre and Drama (IPTD) program. We will discuss innovative interdisciplinary work in-progress and encourage discussion that probes the relationship between theatre, dance, performance studies, and other disciplines. The conference begins with workshops lead by Marvin Carlson, Baz Kershaw, and Rebecca Schneider and will feature talks by national and international leaders in interdisciplinary research. Workshop on "Reconstructing Social History in a Post-Structural World"

This workshop addresses movements within the field of Social History as scholars work to develop new approaches to study social relations in the past.
