Want to develop your science communication skills?

Applications are now open for spring quarter’s free, evening course in science writing and communication.

  • Learn to distil scientific research into engaging, reader-friendly stories for lay audiences.
  • Develop a stronger understanding of narrative technique, story structure and the uses of metaphors and vivid language to convey complex topics.
  • Work with professional science writers and editors for unparalleled exposure to science communication career pathways. (Guest editors in fall 2016 included Becky Lang, Editor-in-Chief at Discover Magazine.)

Previous students have published articles and blogs with several science and general interest publications including Discover, HELIX and Vox, and report increased confidence and skills in sharing their work with a variety of audiences.

Applications for the spring 2017 program are open through March 6. Open to Northwestern STEM+ PhD candidates. More information can be found on the course information page. Contact course instructor sara.grady@northwestern.edu with questions.
