Response to Executive Order on Immigration
Dear Members of The Graduate Community at Northwestern,
I write you today to follow up on the message President Schapiro sent yesterday, and to reaffirm that The Graduate School supports all members of our intellectual community. While the full extent of the ongoing impacts of the President’s executive order on immigration remain unknown at this time, the University is paying close attention to these developments, and will provide resources for information and support for any students, faculty, and staff who may be directly impacted. It is my understanding that the International Office is working closely with individuals we know who have already been affected by the executive order. If you are being impacted by the order but have not been in contact with the International Office, please reach out to them.
As President Schapiro said in his message, we will take necessary actions to protect our students, faculty and staff. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org or the International Office at email@example.com and we will make sure your specific concern is routed to the right place for assistance. Please err on the side of making your issues and concerns known, if not directly to us, then to leadership within your academic program or to a relevant administrator. We can only respond to known issues, so when in doubt, please make contact.
It is more important than ever to maintain our environment of inclusive excellence, and to be thoughtful and respectful of the diverse backgrounds and beliefs of our community members. The following offices/resources are available to each of you, and I encourage you to make use of them if you are feeling stress or anxiety:
Campus Inclusion and Community
Counseling and Psychological Services
Multicultural Student Affairs
Religious & Spiritual Life
Student Assistance and Support Services
Student Enrichment Services
TGS’s Office of Postdoctoral Affairs
In this, as in all things, we are a community that is strongest when we stand together in support and defense of our core values. We will do nothing less in this time of uncertainty.
Warmly as ever,
Dwight A. McBride, PhD
Associate Provost & Dean of The Graduate School
