Graduate Student Appreciation Week: April 4-8

Grad student appreciation week

Graduate Student Appreciation Week was started in 1993 by the National Association of Graduate-Professional Students and is a nationally recognized event that celebrates the invaluable contributions that graduate students make in their communities. Graduate students are integral to the institution’s success and this year, Northwestern University will recognize student achievement by providing access to tools for professional and personal development. The Graduate Student Showcase*
Time: April 7, 7-8:15 pm 
Location: Evanston Campus, Lutkin Hall
This year, the Graduate Student Association is hosting a special night highlighting student talent on campus, with free entertainment and good food! Learn about student-led groups, and upcoming events on campus. Several student groups in the NU community will showcase their art, comedy sketches, music, and other performances. 
 
Chicago Happy Hour
Time: April 8, 4:30-6:30 pm 
Location: Chicago Campus, Method Atrium (Ward)
The perfect opportunity to unwind and mingle with grad students on the Chicago campus. There will be free food, refreshments, and a gift card raffle. 

Art, Wine, and Cheese Reception
Time: April 8, 6:30-8 pm 
Location: Evanston Campus, Dittmar Gallery @ Norris
Come join your fellow graduate students for stimulating conversation and a toast to close this year’s appreciation week. The Dittmar Memorial Gallery, established in 1972, is a student-operated gallery that enlightens and challenges the Northwestern University community with the works of emerging and underrepresented artists from the Chicago area and the Midwest. We will be providing wine, food, and good company.

TGS GSA Appreciation Lunch*
Time: 11:30am-1:30 pm 
Location: Evanston - TGS Commons, Chicago - Abbott Hall
Come and feel appreciated. Eat lunch with friends. Lunch will be provided on a first-come first-serve basis.

Stress Relief: Massage Therapy
Time: 3:30-5:30 pm 
Location: Evanston Campus, TGS Commons.
The perfect opportunity to unwind. Norris is providing free massages from Zen Shiatsu Chicago Massage, so come chat up a storm with other stressed out NU graduate students.  RSVP Required - Spots are extremely limited.

Stress Relief: Animal Therapy*
Time: 3:30-5:30 pm
Location: Chicago Campus, Lurie Gray Seminar Room
Be welcomed by four-legged guests at the CGSA dog therapy session. RSVP Required.

GLAC Meeting and Happy Hour
Time: 4-6pm; 6-8 pm 
Location: Evanston Campus, TGS Conference Room, then World of Beer (1601 Sherman Ave, Evanston)
The Graduate Leadership and Advocacy Council wants to appreciate you this Graduate Student Appreciation Week! Come to our monthly meeting Tuesday, April 5th from 4-6pm in TGS Conference Center at 633 Clark St. Then join GLAC at World of Beer in Evanston from 6-8pm for drinks and refreshments. Stress Relief: Yoga Sessions (2 sessions!)
Time: 4-5 pm and 5-6 pm 
Location: Chicago Campus, Lurie Bldg., Gray Seminar Room
Heal mind and body with a free yoga session! No experience? No problem! We will have a basic yoga session guided by a professional instructor. 

Wednesday April 6th
Brain-Boost Breakfast
Time: 8:30-10 am 
Location: Evanston Campus, Main Library
Start your day off right, and come grab the most important meal of the day at the Main Library, sponsored by NU Libraries. Staff and librarians will also be available to answer questions about services provided by NU libraries. 

Professional Development: Linkedin Headshots (Evanston)
Time: 3-4 pm 
Location: Evanston Campus, TGS Commons
Dress for the job you want. NU Career Advancement is inviting graduate students to get their next profile picture taken by a professional photographer.  Space is limited – RSVP Required

Stress Relief: Norris Mini-Course Painting Workshop
Time: 6-8 pm 
Location: Evanston Campus, ARTica Studios @ Norris
Relax and create your own special painting. Norris Mini-courses is sponsoring a free painting mini-workshop (One-Night Masterpiece). A free 16x20 canvas and paint will be provided. Space is limited – RSVP Required

Thursday April 7th

A Mindful Break: CAPS Workshop
Time: 12-1 pm 
Location: Evanston Campus, TGS Commons
Research tells us that Mindfulness practices help decrease stress and increase an overall sense of well-being. Join Dr. Cindy McKinzie from CAPS for a Mindful Break from your day. You will learn and practice some mindfulness strategies to enhance your sense of health, wellness, and self-compassion. Bring Your Own Lunch! 

Block Museum Tour
Time: 2pm-2:45pm 
Location: Evanston Campus, Block Museum
Misty De Berry, PhD Candidate in the Department of Performance Studies and docent with the Block Museum will give a tour of Charlotte Moorman and the Avant-Garde: 1960's-1980's. The tour engages in practices of embodied viewing while discussing shifting notions of scripting chance, forging collaboration and translating the score from musical notes to written instructions, from ephemeral actions to captured images. Audiences can expect a laid back conversation geared towards both lovers of the avant-garde as well as those who are encountering the work of Charlotte Moorman for the first time. The tour will last 45 minutes to an hour.RSVP required
